I sure hope the pq is a really good upgrade, $29.99 is really pushing it for me at least.

Disney didn't start encoding UHDs with DV until Last Jedi, Coco was released before that so starting with Incredibles 2 all Pixar films going forward should be DV-encoded.

PIXAR thinks it's risky to use Dolby Vision at this time for some reason. They probably are worried due to Sony's processor missteps and the lack of players with low latency decoding to compensate as well as LG OLED issues being ironed out.

HDR has been a real clusterf--k so far.

That Pixar said that they're happy to produce DV streaming versions because they can easily swap out the encode says it all for me, it's something that they don't like about the DV mastering/encoding process on UHD disc specifically and has nothing to do with Sony botching the disc-based playback of it on their TVs. Sony have a big name but they're a small player in the TV market these days, people are ascribing far too much importance to their DV dabbling IMO. Even the LG thing doesn't ring true because people can still watch Pixar's DV-enabled streams on those TVs, grey bar problem and all (which Sony's own streaming implementation also appears to have retained, for what that's worth).

Still, it's a very curious thing to actually come out and say in public when most of the time people are gushing over DV left, right and centre. Perhaps it's not even a technical issue, perhaps they've been burned already over a DV grade not being what the creators intended (yes it can happen, even with ye almighty DV) and so they were able to change out the DV stream but a disc-based version would be fixed in place and would be expensive to do over. Then again the same applies to the HDR10 version as well, so....

Pixar though was rather gushy over Dolby Cinema before "Inside Out" came out theatrical, so I'm not sure why they think otherwise on the home video front.

The two things are NOT the same. HDR for theatrical use has roughly twice the dynamic range of the SDR variant (48 nits 2D Vs 108 nits 2D DV) so it's sometimes referred to as "extended dynamic range" within the industry, while the true "high dynamic range" effect comes into play with (up to) 4000 nit masters that are solely for home video usage, meaning that the movie must be regraded again for that environment.

Pixar clearly have no issues with doing DV 4000 grades as a whole, questions of accuracy to intent aside which happened on Coco, and are happy to put them out on streaming platforms but they have voiced a key concern with putting Dolby Vision onto UHD disc specifically. What that concern is, we don't know.

Any chance this goes down to $24.99 on Amazon so I can price match at Best Buy on Tuesday?

Disney, so it's doubtful.

The Thor steel and when I called them they couldn’t
Ship because it was sold out.
