Default Blu-ray Validated: PGR4 Limited by DVD

We all knew that Sony's decision to use Blu-ray for PS3 games was significant, and we finally have an Xbox developer willing to admit it:

Quote:
The DVD vs. Blu-Ray debate is being fired up again this morning, as PGR4 dev Bizarre Creations blames DVD size for the reason you won't see different times of day in PGR4.

Speaking on its official forums, a Bizarre spokesperson said: "You won't see different times of day per city because this involves recreating all the textures again (one for day and one for night). Whilst this wasn't a problem for our dev team, it was a problem fitting all this data onto a single DVD."

Before you get too upset though, Bizarre says its come up with a sort-of work around by providing different lighting models per city.

"For example," reads the forum post, "Macau is always in the daytime, but if you play it during a storm everything looks darker and more foreboding. If you play during a blizzard then things are slightly tinged blue and everything seems more frozen. Of course, playing this track in sunshine will make everything appear bright and yellowy."

No full-on day cycles then, but some lighting tints to help set the mood.

Of course back at launch there was plenty of controversy over Microsoft's decision to ditch the larger HD-DVD format for the Xbox 360, but developers' concerns over the console's shrinking storage media never really shaped into a significant issue.

Speaking back in 2005, illusive Xbox front man J Allard down played the storage worries, claiming that improved compression rates in the future will solve all of the console's memory woes.

Is this where we'll see PS3 pull ahead in the technology department? Keep your eyes on those textures.

That is Fantastic! Just shows you how Sony was truly forward-thinking when they designed the PS3.

Exactly.

Upfront, some of the developers will whine about how much harder the system is to develop for. Also in the short term you'll see some multiplatform titles port less than ideally from other systems (I'm looking at you EA), but in the long run it's going to more than pay off in spades.

This being a case in point of much more to come.

i still can't believe that microsoft, a software developer, would really go out and say that DVD9s were sufficiant for this gen... i mean look at Halo 3... it spans 3 discs!!! 1 disc for single player, 1 for multi, and another for special extras... all of this could have been remedied by ONE BD50.

anyone who refutes this and says compression will solve it all... even compression has its limits. all those idiots still saying MGS4 is coming to xbox360... i don't care, at least i won't be switching discs

GT4 filled a PS2 DVD so its no surprise that next gen racing games, even with less content - but more detailed content are going over DVD capacity.

Blue Dragon the RPG is also 2 discs.

A lot of PS2 games were going 2 discs with all the CG custscenes.

M$ just released their console so early I don't think that HDMI or HD-DVD included was really an option.

That's the delicate balance of futur proofing vs. rushing to the market before your competitors.

Blue Dragon's 3 DVD's but of course the funny excuse for that being ok is it uses a lot of FMV for cutscenes.

Why not? Bill Gates is infamous for his quote "640K should be enough for anyone". :-)

LOL... I think this is so funny. All this means is that in two years everyone will be going out to buy a new XBOX 720 which will probably still fall short of the PS3. I will never buy another MS console, I don't even know why I have the 360, I guess its just the techno-geek in me.

I like the fact that the developers are starting to admit that space is an issue. I can't believe that MS tried to get people to believe that DVDs were enough space. Why won't they learn that you can never have enough storage? Hopefully more and more developers will start to realize this and start maximizing the PS3s capabilities.

a long time ago i was told by a friend who lived in japan of their way of thinking. he told me that the japanese do not plan for the next day, nor the next year, but the next ten years. when they build roads, buildings, business plans, etc... they think about what will be there in ten years time and adjust plans accordingly to make things as fluid as possible come transition time. they believe in what we call "futureproofing" a product so that when 10 years comes, a product you have now will not be obsolete. someone once said that widescreen tvs are just a luxury item... and? the same people that 1080p would be useless as there were no sets that could handle it... and where are we now? someone said that HDMI 1.3 was pointless... no one uses it? what about now? they will always force the present time's limitations on you because that is all they know... when you plan for the present, you live in it... when tomorrow comes, they will reap more money from your upgrades... this is how americans work.

a fine example is the PS2... still strong afer all these years? why, because it had everything in box that people wanted (DVD player... remember how they said the DVD player would bring it down becuase of the price??, optical audio output, usb ports, HDD expansion-which sucked i admit)...

the xbox 360 will be obsolete in the next two years so you will see a steady stream of "fixes" and promos like the elite... the next will be the ulitmate, and then the extreme, and then the super deformed platnium edition... the list will go on...

The PS2 was in many ways ahead of its time. With less than half of the processing power of the Xbox, it was able to compute twice the FLOPS - a very amazing accomplishment. The PS3 is no different. It has been designed to have a shelf life much longer than the 360. The most difficult time in the PS3s life is the beginning. Once it becomes established (I think we are witnessing that now), the gains will come in its longer lifecycle.

I really hope they make GTAIV in a good way for the PS3 and not have it limited because of XBox.

Sorry, but I Don't think so.
The optimization of Ps3 would mean a 50GB game. Filled with either more content or better graphics sound etc.
How on earth can they make the same 50Gb game then fit in M$ 360's DVD9? 4 to 5 discs? doubt it..
Face it, As long as there are more schmucks who opted to pay the same price for an inferior product, we will have to suffer. Or do what i plan to, don't buy GTAIV if it's gimped.

Now for those praying that MGS4 goes to 360......Even if they twist Koji's arm to do the port, they can't stop him from filling the original game to hit the PS3's maximum. And Good luck porting that to dvd9....
