There are occasions that I do appreciate having a pop-up menu accessible. It's not a full interruption of the movie itself as opposed to a main menu is. The Oppo 203 has the ability to change the audio on the fly (usually), but it doesn't tell you the exact details sometimes, so it's nice to see the exact details in the disc's audio track selection menu.

The Oppo 203 handles subtitles so I don't have to go the disc's menus for that. I make a point to sort out the audio before I start the movie so that there are no distractions and no extra remotes (long story). There aren't any special features on a 4k UHD so that's a non-issue. at least not any that I care about particularly. I don't use the disc's menus much outside of starting a movie (when I need to). That is very odd and I just noticed that odd quirk today discussing menus. |

I can't tell if you're a intentionally a troll or just one by your nature. But you come across as someone who has no idea what he's talking about mixed up with a complete lack of reading comprehension combined with a massive dollop of condescension.
There is no way you can remember what Ghostbusters looked like in the theater 34 years ago. In any event, I'll explain using small words since you didn't comprehend the first time. Ghostbusters has lots of grain because the film used was grainy high-speed film. If you don't like grain I'm sure your TV has some kind of DNR function you can crank up. For the rest of you, how do I block someone since Von Magnum is a waste of my time (and your time)? |

The review states that the Atmos mix "is not the kind of controversial remix that adds new effects or attempts to alter the dimensions of the sonic field with which fans have lived for the past nineteen years". Are there any Atmos mixes that are actually guilty of that?

Grain on a film print being projected is a lot different than on a digital scan of a negative. Grain on a print is smoother and a lot more subtle due to being several generations removed from the source compared to grain on a negative which is much more refined due to being the source itself.
We're already far past the way films looked theatrically, essentially we're at the point where we're getting 1:1 reproductions of original negatives except with color timing and intended framing of course. For better or for worse. |

Von, seriously... you come across very hostile, very defensive, not very friendly, and downright condescending.

I'm not a moderator, but as a friendly suggestion, I think you ought to be a bit more cordial in your posts here. You'll find people reciprocate pretty quickly. Not everyone will always do so, but that's on them, right? Regarding the topic of grain/de-graining: This is my opinion, and the opinion of many here on the forums, in this day and age, de-graining should NOT be a thing. You kill fine detail in the process of removing the grain. If you prefer to have less grain, your TV should have setting to help with that. There are so many examples where the studios have destroyed what could've been a great image by applying too much DNR. |

YOU be friendly with that guy. The movie is unwatchable for me. You and others may enjoy swimming in grain, but too much is too much for some of us. There's a difference between a film and a movie. Grain doesn't exist in digital as such so someone asking me WHY I'm reading a 4K forum like this guy below is beyond absurd. Grain was one of the things that did NOT bother me with The Matrix 4K. Ghostbusters has maybe 2-4x the grain and it doesn't blend well for some reason. It doesn't look much better in 2K either. The previous iTunes copy had far less grain. Go look in the Top Gun 3D thread. I'm the one defending the director there as most people HATE grain with 3D. I don't want a cartoon look to get rid of grain, but there's a point where it interferes with the enjoyment of the movie itself. That point probably varies by the individual, but not in this guy's mind. It's his way or the highway. That is childish behavior. Real adults learn to live with the fact everyone has different tastes and opinions. Quote:

Either way, grain is an anomaly. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with the movie itself. If it could be removed without losing any detail, I'd say good riddance. It's like tape noise. It's an artifact of recording to tape. That noise did not exist in the real world and neither does film grain! It's a chemical error on the film and varies with film formulation, speed and exposure. Some levels of tape noise are tolerable on an album. Too much noise and you're listening to more noise than music! Removing it might affect some low level detail, but with really top notch tools, it can be very minimal indeed. Removing at least enough so that it's enjoyable again makes sense to me. But that level is subjective and some will always take either extreme for various reasons. All or nothing doesn't work well in society. Look at the state of US politics. |

It could be that you are very aggressive and take up entire pages with your thoughts like the one above. It’s almost like you’re trying to convince yourself with your notions. But hey, that’s what these threads are for so have at it. Just don’t be surprised if you alienate people while doing so
