Damn I need to get myself one of these! Watching movies and listening to music without a sub blows. To make matters worse my speakers Frequency response is 135-20,000 Hz .

135?! That's bad even for satellite speakers. Most satellites are about 120hz. Without the lower end all you're getting is dialog and a bit of midrange. While putting all that through the subwoofer does have its disadvantages, it'll sound 100% better than no bottom end!

I can definitely recommend this sub if you want something good on a budget. Sounds like the BIC series that DC picked up is good as well. Mine seems to be a great sub for the money. I really enjoy it. One thing I noted vs. my old sub was that I get ZERO hiss, which is really nice. I used to get a bit of hiss when the sub was on. It was negligible, but still irritating to know it was there.

That's actually part of the reason I started this thread. After seeing and hearing the PA-120, I would be a lot more willing to recommend or try the rest of the speakers in their line.

Nice write-up and photos. How cool is it that someone had pictures of the sub's "guts." I like the idea of a continuously variable phase control. Talk about fine tuning for maximum SPL from your listening position!

Funny you mentioned about the weight of a "salt bag." I just bought a 50 pounder the other day (Buffalo, NY area is in the deep-freeze, too - heh).

Glad the sub's an improvement you are looking for. Most definitely spec'd out better than other subs in its price range. Yes, there is certainly a difference in sub performance from one model to the next. Especially in producing the sensation from the lowest possible frequencies. Location, location, location, too!

Idget some new main speakers with better FR first ... You will have to cross the sib so high it will sound kind of muddy

I am liking the idea of this thread. You have to admit this forum has become biased to the ED sub.

I myself just got the S12 from Aperion which roughly the same size as the ED, but a lot better looking. I will post a pic as soon as I get it uploaded to photobucket.

Not to disagree with your sub, which I'm sure looks great, but my ED sub looks great with a matte finish. The odye, however, looks horrible.

Not trying to badmouth your sub, but some folks may not like the form factor or overall bulk. Besides, this is the non-eD thread!

Hagar- I looked up your sub. Really nice! 20hz in a nice compact sub. So, did you get it through Aperion (since it's discontinued) or did you go elsewhere? May I ask how much you paid for it? I'm curious if there are deals to be found on this sub since it's no longer manufactured according the link.

Yeah I got it from Aperion for $350 and free shipping. They get exchanges on the older models here and there and I luckced out on them getting one in on an exchange. They also might have an S10 also which could be had for around $250 I believe.

These subs use 1" thick HDF for their boxes and use 9 coats of lacquer for their finish. Here is an example of the quality of the finish.


That is the S8 which I still have. How do you like your new sub?

Wow, that's nice looking. I need to update my pics with my sub, but unfortunately it looks like we may have misplaced our camera.

Anyway, I really like my sub. I haven't given it a thorough thrashing, but we watched "Serenity" last night, and it's got some pretty decent bass in some spots. It seemed to really blend in well and brought a smile to my face more than once. Overall I'm happy with it. It's got a nice piano finish on the top as well. If I would've known about the Aperion deal though I might've sprung for one.

This thread was a great idea. While I can appreciate someone's input and feedback on a product I should buy, I think that every thread seeking advice for a subwoofer becomes dominated by the ED and overkill to the point there are arguments going back and forth.

Anyway, I am interested in following subwoofer brands; Martin Logan, Def Tech, SVS, and Polk Audio (only the DSW series). My max pricing is going to be $600. I'll let you guys know what I decide to get.

I have a klipsch RW10d sub. It is a great sub for having a ten inch driver. It does really well in my 15x31 room.

I was looking at the SVS subs myself before I got a deal on the S12 I got from Aperion. I hear the 12" model which is in your price range is very good.

I've got two Bravus 10D Dual 10" powered subs from Aperion, just awesome. Albeit pricey, but dual 10" drivers, 300 watt BASH amp, customizable parametric EQ, digital display, piano black... hard to find all that stuffed in 15"H x 13.5" W x 13.5" D

Cool another Aperion owner.

I was quite suprised with the 8D my co-worker purchased I can only imagine how good the 10D sounds.

They are just out of my price range but they look and sound awesome. I am really liking my S12 thus far and your right the Bravus line is quite a bit smaller which is probably why Aperion went in that direction. Something smaller is easier get the old WAF.
