Should I get my monitor calibrated?

I had my tv shipped from fry's. Should i pay 300 dollars and get my tv adjusted by best buy? Is it worth it and can you tell a big diffrence?

Got my Pioneer plasma ISF calibrated and it was worth it to me. The biggest difference I noticed was in colors, like flesh tones. Here's a link to a thread that I started before I had my tv calibrated, asking if it it worth it.

If you have a little bit of ambition and sense you can order the DVE (Digital Video Essentials) disc on Ebay for 15-30 bucks. I used it on my Panasonic plasma and like the results. The factory settings are usually junk, so with this disc you can tweak it really close to industry color standards.

If you are really a videophile, you will notice the difference. I did that and I think it was worth it. But I am using an LCD and I'm not sure how accurate Plasma is.
I love my configuration, makes it look tons better than it did.

Definitely have it ISF calibrated. Makes a huge improvement with some and a small improvement with others, but always an improvement.

I was told that new TV's should be 'broke in' prior to getting it calibrated. Something you may want to look into, ecspecially if you just got it.

I'm using hdmi and still used the disc. The colors are alot more accurate and contrast/brightness are right on than when it came out of the box.

Almost all panels come out of the box 'hot'. Color's cranked up... contrast is the highest it'll go... fixing it is easy. Start with contrast. Take a Blu-Ray and freeze frame the disc on the end credits of the film - white letters on black background. Take the contrast just below where the white letters start to 'bloom' or bleed out (fuzzy edges). Then work on your brightness. Take you best looking disc and run a chapter that has good shadows and natural light. You want to see detail in blacks like a black suit but not so high as to make the blacks look gray. From there. work on the color setting. Take it all the way down to almost B&W then slowly up from there. Have enough color in the faces to look natural, not overblown to impress visitors and faces look orange. From there, do your tint and faces are best to work with. Neither green or red. Check the panel's pre-sets like 'warm, cool' etc... cool will usually put more blues into the whites like Sony likes to do but in the real world, whites are not that stark... not that bluish but it's up to you.

What's too dark to one guy is too light to another so work with how you like the oic yourself.

This might be work for a quick and easy fix, which some places will also do for you. But the truly accurate optimization/calibration can actually show you a graph (or a series of them) to pinpoint the various light levels for each color and give you a very precise and accurate color correction. This might not be that noticeable to some, but anything you do "by eye" will never be as good as a true calibration.
Trust me on this, always calibrate your monitors and tvs for the most accurate recreation of color as intended by the original photographer/director. I should know, my job is to work on color correcting photographs for National Geographic. Calibration is essential for truly accurate color recreation.
