Even though we only have ONE AMC theater, and a zillion Marcus theaters, I will switch to the AMC plan once my annual subscription ends (or Moviepass goes under, whichever comes first). I prefer AMC anyway. I just renewed my Stubs card a week ago, so that part sucks, but I'll still get to use it for 5 1/2 months. That's when my MP plan ends...
Plus Coke like to give free soda and popcorn at AMC... And they have the only true IMAX theater in town...

MoviePass made a Facebook post clarifying the changes

Quote:
A Message To Our Members:

The revolution is happening now, and it is all thanks to you. In less than a year, three million pioneers joined us on our journey to see more great movies at an unbeatable price. And we want to thank you, our community, for your steadfast support of our company and growth.

In the spirit of innovation and growth, we are now announcing the next phase in the evolution of our product: Demand Pricing.

In the coming weeks, we will roll out three different upgrades to our base $9.95 service for our members.

Bring-A-Guest: MoviePass members will be able to purchase extra tickets to a showing of a movie right through the MoviePass app, so that you can seamlessly reserve seats for you and your friends (at e-ticketing partner theaters) to watch a film even if they aren’t MoviePass subscribers. As a benefit, if your friend signs up for MoviePass within 24 hours, we’ll refund the entire cost of the ticket!

Peak Pricing: MoviePass is committed to maintaining our low monthly price as we continue to grow rapidly. Rather than raise our prices or limit viewings, our plan has been to develop a new variable pricing system based on the demand for particular showtimes. Under this plan, if the combination of demand for a title, date or part of day is higher, subscribers may be asked to pay a small additional fee depending on the level of demand. You can avoid this peak surcharge by choosing an alternative date or film. We will also soon give subscribers one “peak pass” per month, allowing them to waive a Peak Price surcharge once per month. Annual and Quarterly subscribers will not incur peak pricing until their current subscription term ends and then renews.

Premium Showings: MoviePass members on any plan will soon be able to access RealD 3D, IMAX 2D or 3D, and other Premium Large Format showings of any film for an additional upgrade fee.

These features are being tested currently and will slowly roll out to all our members over the next several weeks.

Our aim is to create the most flexible and cost-efficient product, so that we don’t have to simply raise the price on the subscription. We appreciate your flexibility as we evolve our service to keep MoviePass at a low cost. We can’t express how much we value all of you for being part of that vision.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
The MoviePass Team

Translation: We will add a fee to any movie we like, for any reason, at any time. How much will that fee be? WHO KNOWS?! EVEN WE DON'T KNOW!

The revolution is happening now, and it is all thanks to you.

But Revolution got cancelled...

Annual subscribers, like you, are exempt from Peak Pricing. It only applies to month to month users, like me. I’ll be definitely using that one a month waiver so they can see how much its disliked. I’m betting they believe only a low number of month to month subs will use the waiver. Yeah. Right.

Now to decide if I use the first waiver on Mamma Mia or Mission: Impossible. They might just hold out giving these waivers until Fall though. We can’t put anything past them.

Not an annual subscriber, and no one should have confidence that MoviePass is going to roll this out without problems.

I'm expecting lots and lots of "unintentional" errors.

Some annual subscribers will be charged Surge Pricing, expect quite a few unauthorized charges.
Some customers won't receive those waivers.
Communication on exactly what/how much those Surges will be is going to be poor or non-existent.
And, of course, since their customer service is abysmal, disputing incorrect charges will be a absolute nightmare.

They have proven they do not have the capacity to handle abrupt changes to the service or sharp influxes in issues that must be handled by customer service.

I just canceled my membership, guess that's it for me unless they figure out a way to undo this mess.

Sorry. I thought you were an annual subscriber, my mistake. And yes, they’ll screw up just like they had issues with the annual Costco promotion and hid the the requirement of being a new I Heart Radio user in the terms & conditions for that promo. Its also stupid that current month to month subscribers can’t opt to switch to an annual billing option. I get that they are bleeding money but giving the users who have been with the service for a while this choice will help build a bigger user base and stem some of that loss.

Or you know... just make us pay $20 a month. The choice of theaters, the freedom to earn loyalty points, and the fact that we are already using the dang service is enough to keep most of us with the higher price point.

A rep from MoviePass is on the reddit answering questions
https://www.reddit.com/r/MoviePassCl...g_bringaguest/

There will be inventory limits per market and if they hit their inventory limit, the app will be updated to show peak has hit and how much the surge price is.

Can be on any day of the week at any showing time on any film, new or old, blockbuster or indie.

Surge pricing will roll out slowly, it will be tested in their big markets first and rolled out to smaller markets as time goes on.

Bring a guest will also only be available to e-ticketing theaters at first.

Watch them only allow 100 moviepass users within a market in a certain time frame before surging the price. Bigger markets are going to suffer from this, big time.

You are too generous: fifty and its surge pricing.

Just noticed this:

So I am good through November at least.
Even then I am not in a huge market and U dont see myself running into the surge pricing too much since it doesnt kick in until they already do X number of tickets.

I wonder how this works for those of us that signed up in August but didn't receive a card to activate until October.

It goes by when your current subscription ends and you are billed again. You can look in the app under Account.

While it wont be convenient for everyone, you could stop in and get your tickets for the evening early in the day, before they sell more tix and the surge pricing kicks in.

All of this is still better than paying full price. It’s not great, but better than nothing

So reading over the reddit posts where they are answering questions.
Someone asked about the IMAX/3D prices, they replied with this:

"If that theater normally charges $12 for a standard showing, and 3D is $16, you pay the difference.
If an IMAX theater charges a particular price, we would set a fee that's based on standard tickets in your area.
"

So premium prices are going to be different for most, all depending on how the pricing is at your local theaters.
