What's with Criterion shrink wrapping their latest releases? Is this the new norm now? It' been like this since the beginning of the year. Shrink wrapping wrinkles the clear plastic that protects the artwork. Has anyone received AWFUL TRUTH or MIDNIGHT COWBOY with the regular cellophane? I've been getting all my Criterions through Amazon.

I haven't got those two, but my pre-orders of Westfront 1918, and Passion of Joan of Arc were shrink wrapped fine with no damage this year along with my copy of Safety Last. Granted I haven't got a Criterion from Amazon since March or April so IDK.

A couple of days ago I watched Zatoichi Challenged and it’s a usual top notch movie in the series. The cinematography and fight scenes are great; the child actor is great too, he adds a fatherly element to Zatoichi.
Today I watched Zatoichi and the Fugitives and it’s one of my favorites so far. The fight scenes are amazing and quick; it’s amazing how well edited they are. The cinematography by Kazuo Miyagawa is stunning and I finally hear the song from the trailer on Criterion’s YouTube channel. And we get to see some blood and a severed arm, which is rare. I have been watching these films since December of 2015 taking my time and I absolutely have loved every single one of them. If you have not purchased this set, do so during the upcoming sale. I highly recommend them. I still have more films to go but I’m not in a rush. |

In hopeful anticipation of a Burning release in the USA, I've been catching up with some of Lee Chang-Dong's earlier work. Having seen Secret Sunshine I decided to give Oasis a go last night and I think it's a very strong film, definitely would be worthy of a Criterion release. I'm going to check out Peppermint Candy and Poetry this weekend.
Also, I think we're overdue for some Rene Clement, an upgrade of Forbidden Games and a release of Battle of the Rails would be welcome. Thoughts? |

I just watched the Last Year at Marienbad blu courtesy of Netflix disc rental and damn I'm so sad this is OOP. This movie is excellent and I could easily see myself rewatching this semi-regularly.
What a hypnotic film. It's a labyrinth of words, imagery, senses, everything! The manipulation the film imposes on the viewer (me) is really unnerving. I can't think of another film (I've seen) that so skillfully plays with my perception. The film almost felt like a cinematic visualisation of MC Escher's Relativity. It looks like the UK release is still pretty good and it's region A & B? I think I need to get this asap. Any opinions on this alternative? And any recommendations for films that might have the same effect are also welcome! |
