I can live with that, but sorry to me Empire's songs overshadow much of OMC. There was a couple of really good songs on OMC, but the production and vibe of Empire was what really hooked me. But I really like OMC too, don't get me wrong, and respect it for what it was, but I heard better Metal concept albums from say King Diamond. Empire will always be my favorite Queensryche album by far, even one of my Top 30 albums of all time.

But yes, Queensryche deserves some love.

I should mention I've seen Queensryche during this classic period four times live too. And each time they were opening for somebody else (see Kiss, Ozzy, etc.).

Don't get me wrong I love Empire but I liken it to Metallica's Black album. Sure it was all polished up and presentable to the masses, but it lacked the meat of Master of Puppets and Justice just like Empire did to Mindcrime. I can't speak of King Diamond too much. After Fate's Don't Break the Oath I really didn't follow him. As far as concept albums go, The Wall is the only better one IMO. I did get to see Queensryche headline on the Promised Land tour with Type O Negative. My other shows were opening for Ozzy (Rage tour), Def Leppard (Mindcrime tour) and Metallica 2x (Mindcrime tour). Wow, I guess I saw them 5 times.

That's a good comparison. And I would agree musically/songwise, there's better stuff on Master/Justice than on Black, but I dunno Empire just "speaks" to me more. Damn, "Della Brown" man..... To me, nothing gets more deep than that track compared to anything on OMC. However, there nothing as fast n' heavy as OMC's "Spreading The Disease" on Empire either. Let's end with this: as a Prog Rock/Metal fan, you should own BOTH these records, both are important building blocks of the genre, and they were both done by the same band.

Ah man, you missed out. The first four solo albums by King are fantastic, both musically and storytelling. But you're never too late, listen to "Them" and "Conspiracy" back to back (they're Parts 1 & 2) and you'll understand.

Well, as Mickey Knox once said:
"It's hard to beat the king....."

Yeah, it's sorta sad. I never went to a concert for them, they just seemed to be there with who I wanted to see. The last time I saw them was around 2007 in support of "Heaven And Hell" on that Take Cover album. They broke into their cover of "Welcome To The Machine" and the audience was like "Zzzzzzzzzzz". Not the way I wanted to see them looked upon. They deserved better.

Thanks for the responses, Gator. Pull out a Queensryche album tonight for me this July 4th. Hell, they ARE an American band.....

Della Brown was a fantastic song, especially unplugged.

The Warning is easily my fav by them, & throw in the EP for good measure. I seen them in the early days & they were awesome, not so good on the Mindcrime II tour (I think? lol) w/Judas Priest. JP didn't really sound good that night either. The Operation: Livecrime cd/dvd set is really good too.

I know I didn't show too much love for the early full-on Metal days, but they hold true to me too. That Power Metal era of theirs (and say Fates Warning's) kicks-ass, but I was most impressed as a whole with Empire. But thanks for the input BHP, noted!

Hard to argue with "Take Hold Of The Flame" and "The Lady Wore Black"...among others. Those two songs hooked me in from the start. Oh the early 80's high school days.
