I understand the bag caught it and pulled it up but that doesn't explain why the nail was there in the first place.

[Show spoiler]Are you just assuming that they are only vulnerable when their flaps are open? I don't remember this being mentioned at any point earlier in the movie. I just assumed that they had no weapons for the first 3/4 of the movie. When she pulled out the shotgun and shells I'm like "oh! well why don't they just shoot it then" it's just a giant bug after all.
