IMDB ratings have meaning due to the fact it is a large pool of people rating just how much they like a film.

Most of my time is spent watching films from the 30s-50s and think the IMDB system still holds up pretty well for older films. If anything, many new films are skewed to rating much better than they are. (Avengers Infinity War is a top 25 film of all time in terms of audience enjoyment/satisfaction, etc?)

I'm a big stop motion animation fan, and that clearly puts me in a Harryhausen fan. But I'm also well versed enough to know that most of the movies he worked on do not rise to the level of his special effects and special effects alone do not make a great film.

The ratings of his films I feel are fairly spot on. The guy wasn't the director, he was the visual effects creator. Some of the movies he worked on were good, and others wouldn't have much value outside of his contributions.

We do all have different tastes, IMDB is the equalizer that shows us on average what film goers think and rate the experience. It isn't perfect by any stretch, but if on average someone thinks a movie is a 5 out of 10, that probably isn't worth a premium price to anyone but a die hard fan.
I don't put much stock in the IMDB ratings myself, for a variety of reasons. If you feel they have value, that's fine. But what's not cool is posting a defense of them just so they can act as justification for you being a jerk towards another member here and denigrating his purchases. Would you like us to check out your collection and start picking out some of the films we think are crappy and mocking you for actually spending money on them?

Lee Marvin was cool in a badass way. He was just a guy I would never want to mess with... not just on screen but in real life. Coburn was cool in a laidback 60s way. He was just a classy guy in every way possible and he showed a great sense of humour in many of his films. I always remember being thrilled when he made a comeback in the 90s culminating in his Oscar win because he spent much of the 80s out of commission with health issues related to severe arthritis (if you look closely in his later movies you can see the effects of this on his hands which looked very gnarled).

+1 Loved James Coburn. You are right on the money; classy, cool, and laid back about it There's a quirky little film from 1993 I really liked, "Deadfall" ...... Michael Biehn, Charlie Sheen, Nicolas Cage, and James Coburn. It was great to see him return to film after his arthritis issues in the 80's.

).
The only mocking was related to an initial gross misrepresentation of what was paid, which was then cleared up after another member questioned how they got the deal.

I have quite a few film I've gotten for free and a ton I paid less than $3 for. Most of which should be pretty obvious based on what the real core of the collection is, which consists of what looks like a film schools library.

I have an amazing collection for someone where other hobbies take up even more of my resources. You won't find anything mock worthy that I paid anywhere close to retail for unless you count some twilight time releases, which probably wouldn't be advisable in this thread.

I have the German digibook of "Deadfall". Really insane film, even aside from Cage's bizarre performance.

Me too. According to tracking, it should arrive today! It's a blind buy for me and when I was reading up on it I was fascinated by James Shigeta's biography - I only knew him from Die Hard but he had a very interesting life and career.

"The Crimson Kimono" is a damn fine noir. I will say I'm slightly disappointed that the video quality is a little rough around the edges, especially compared to a lot of other Sony-Columbia B&W remasters; the elements were probably in poor condition.

So is this Disney Fox deal going to do anything to TT releasing Fox titles?

Of course not. Any existent deals would have to be honored even with a merger

Do we know that, and do we know how long their current deal was set up for? They already lost MGM/UA stuff didn't they?

Fox's home video distribution rights to MGM titles are up in 2020.

Oh, I see! Yes, I believe, MGM didn't like the way of TT's business model so TT no longer release MGM titles but still have whatever low quantity titles available.

Actually it is: while their existing deal holds good, Fox has put a moratorium on new deals.

Or vice versa: TT didn't want to release as many titles per month as MGM/UA wanted, especially since they had to pass on so many titles because of poor master material.

Even in the vast majority of his "serious" roles, Marvin had a wryness and affability to him, not to mention the bevy of outright comedic performances (The Comancheros, Donovan's Reef, Shout at the Devil and his Oscar-winning turn in Cat Ballou) he was responsible for.

I think the main difference is that Marvin had leading man charisma in spades while Coburn was often better-suited in supporting parts. I confess to not having seen the Flint movies though, so I'll try to be on the lookout. For the longest time they were nothing more than a vague Austin Powers reference to me.

I agree with the other user (and many like him) though, you simply don't get that caliber of leading man anymore. I would have loved to have seen Marvin and McQueen share the screen, what pyrotechnics!
