Sure some of the other awards might be interesting (best supporting actor) or obvious (best animated feature), but these are the 5 categories that "really" matter.
In history, only 3 movies have ever swept the Big Five: It Happened One Night (1934), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), and The Silence of the Lambs (1991). Obviously it's not even possible this year (no single movie is nominationed in each of the Big Five categories), but oh well. Last edited by toef; 01-22-2009 at 05:09 PM. |

Godfather got 3 of the big 5, but Coppola lost Best Director, and it didn't have anyone nominated for Best Actress. I think getting the Best Actor and Best Actress awards into a single movie is the hardest part.

I will not be watching the oscars. No TDK Best Director or Best picture...
This is crap. I have seen all of those movies except for "The Reader" and I would put Dark Knight behind Slumdog Millionaire but ahead of Ben Button and Milk. |

Here is how it should have gone had the nominations been right.
Best Picture- Dark Knight Best Actor- Clint Eastwood (Gran Torino) Best Actress- Kate Winslet (Revolutionary Road instead of The Reader) Best Director- Christopher Nolan Best Original Screenplay- Dark Knight Best Adapted Screenplay- Slumdog Millionaire |

I call:
Slumdog gets: Best picture, score, director, adapted screenplay Mickey Rourke gets best actor I want to say Streep for best actress, but Winslett bumped her out in the GG so it might happen again ![]() Heath with Supporting Winslett with Supporting Wall*E Best animated Waltz with Bashir gets best foreign film. |

I think the only one that's almost certainly locked up is Mickey Rourke for Best Actor.
Winslett for Best Actress might be almost certain as well. I figure Slumdog will get best adapted screenplay, and best original will probably go to Milk. That leaves Best Picture and Director. For best picture, I think Slumdog Millionaire is the front-runner, but won't be surprised if it loses. It may have won Best Drama at the Golden Globes, but the GG's have a bad track record of predicting the Oscar winner (last year they picked Atonement, year before picked Babel, then Brokeback, then The Aviator... needless to say: wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong). I wouldn't be surprised if Benjamin Button starts sweeping up Oscars, including Best Director, so I figure it will be one of those two movies getting both. |

I have a hunch it'll be a Slumdog sweep, with Milk for Original Screenplay, plus Winslet and Rourke.
Most of those wouldn't be my own picks. Nor would I nominate half the people in other categories. But the Oscars are what they are, and there's no point getting too worked up about them. |

God I hate the Oscars. When The Reader (which has a 6.3/10 average from professional critics on RT) gets a Best Pic nomination over TDK (8.5/10), The Wrestler(8.3/10), and Wall-E (8.5/10), you know there is something wrong. I have no problem with the other choices, but it seems like they always throw a big f*ck you in there with one of their selections just to show you who's boss. I'm actually quite glad that their ratings have been steadily declining because they really deserve it.

I'd rather see Streep win as well, but the Golden Globe winners have a tendency to carry over. |

Kate Winslet is the best actress of her generation and she's long overdue for an award. Meryl Streep hasn't won in 26 years and gave a chilling performance. A tough call. |
