Or it's just a movie and not even meant to be an accurate depiction of real life. Real Indians also don't have the ability to rip a man's still beating heart out and sacrifice him while he's still alive. That Spielberg and his poor research, sheesh, doesn't he know that's not anatomically possible?

Why are you going on about "research" ? Lucas and Spielberg knew very well they weren't depicting real customs, the were homaging serials and adventure flicks from the 30s and 40s which depicted acts like that. They knew it had nothing to do with reality and had they wanted to depict reality they would have known how to do that.

I don't think there was research involved. I think it more likely that both Lucas and Spielberg were inspired by Gunga Din and Lucas, at least, was inspired by The Stranglers Of Bombay.

Yes, clearly inspired by old B-movies that were never all that concerned with historical/cultural accuracy. Totally understand why it rubs people the wrong way, but I have family members who hate ToD (or refuse to watch it), and I have others who get it and like/love it. I obviously fall in the latter camp.

I don't know how to feel about people who watch an escapist adventure film like Temple of Doom and come out thinking they saw some sort of serious attempt at an ethnographic portrayal. As if it's the first time they've ever seen cartoonish villains - the only difference being that they're not American. Jeez. Forcing oneself to be offended by anything is one of the worst trends in contemporary times.

Recognizing it and being offended by it aren't the same thing. I think the swordsman getting shot in Raiders is hilarious, but I've read some folks who are turned off by it and I can't tell them they're wrong.
I think our modern problems are less modern problems of getting too easily offended by things and more the same old, old problem of trying to filter different perspectives through a one-size-fits-all ideology. Last edited by happydood; 08-02-2018 at 03:11 PM. |

How do you know that no Indian eats that? Who even implied that Indians do eat that? |
