I am getting ready to replace my Toshiba 42" CRT Rear projection HDTV since the convergence chip went out in it recently and would like some advice. I am looking to replace it with something in the $800-$1,200 range (shipped). I would like your advice as to what to get.
I have been seriously considering the Samsung 56" DLP rear projection 56A650 as it is around $1050 shipped. However, due to a recent thread arguing the benefits of some 720p (768p) displays over 1080p displays, I would like some input on this. I mainly want something that will look great for movies. We don't do any video games and are already in the habit of turning it off or changing the channel when not in use to avoid burn-in so that isn't a big concern. We do watch regular TV on it but I'm more concerned about movie (Blu-Ray) performance rather than TV performance. I have all but ruled out LCD's due to poor black level, contrast, and color performance as well as bad motion issues but I could be swayed back if you have a good option. I also want something at least 42" but preferably bigger. Also because of the 50" rule, I don't really care about 1080p as much as I do good color and contrast performance unless the size gets above that. Let the arguments begin... Thanks, |

I'd go w/ the panasonic TH-42PZ80U $845 at 6ave(thanks crackinhedz for finding that)
or the updated mod. TH42PZ85U for $1048 both are 1080p's and doing my own research for upgrading my bedroom 1080p aquos.. Either of these would be big upgrades. |

So obviously, Panasonic is the recommended choice for Plasmas. However, I see other votes for other technologies but no one has posted their suggested models.
Anyone else care to chime in with their preference and why they recommend it? Thanks, |

I believe that the previously posted panasonic plasmas are probably your biggest bang for the buck in the sense of a quality tv for the price. I recall even consumer reports having those plasmas as their top tvs for a long time (don't know if they still are), and they even said the 720p model looked and performed better than numerous 1080p models. I would still suggest getting the 1080p model though. I think the biggest knock on them that plasma screens can be somewhat reflective compaired to LCD or Rear Proj TVs (dont know about these particular sets), they use some more energy (whoop-de-do
![]() As far as other tv techs go, I have always liked the rear projection tvs, too. There are three main tech with in RPTVs that I know of LCD, DLP, and LCoS. My parents, grandparents, and I all own LCD rear proj tvs and they are great (mine was really cheap b/c sony discontinued them ![]() All in all though, I would suggest, like others told me to do concerning home theater, that you go to as store and just look at the tvs yourself. While specs and techs may be important to some, its really what looks good to you ![]() Good Luck |

I Have A Panasonic Th-42pz80u 1080p Plasma Paired With A Panasonic Dmp-bd30 Blu-ray Player. I Bought Both At Sears After Christmas And With Both Pieces Spent Barely Over $1,000.00. The Catch Is That The Dmp-bd30 Has A Firmware Update Out Now, But It Can Be Downloaded From Many Different Sites At No Cost.

why settle for a tiny 50-60" screen when you can get a front projector where you measure in feet not inches 6' to 15 feet! |

dont know much about projectors, but the 46pz80u is good value at 1072 from 6ave, i recently ordered it... great deal..
or if 6ave has the 42pz80u for 845 its a steal. or costco has the 50px80u 720P model for 899 and their 90 day return policy+ 2 year ( i think) warranty... or u can open up a sears card and get 10% off the 50pz80u which would make it 810+tax.\\ i saw the 46pz80u and its stunning and the PQ is great. as for LCD's cant really think of something great UNDER 1k... only LCD that wow'ed me was the XBR 52" that was like 2200+ in frys. |

I'll put my vote in for the Samsung 50" 720p Plasma (PN50A450)...check this Sunday's Best Buy ad, it will be on sale for $879. (Sears had it last week for $854)
I also like the Panasonic 50" 720p Plasma (Th50px80u) that people have mentioned above for $899 a lot! If either store I went to had the Panasonic in stock, I would have gone with that. Good luck with your decision and keep us posted! |

best bang for the buck in my opinion would be a samsung 1080p dlp. beautiful picture, big screen (50+) and small price tag. i just bought my second rear proj tv a couple months back for $899...it was a 6 series 50 inch sammy. good luck with your search.

Not to sound like a fanboi or anything, but the best TV for your $$ is a Panasonic plasma (720p or 1080p, depending on size and $$). No other TV will give you a comparable picture quality for the size/$$. This is not just my opinion, but the opinion of countless others around here.

I have narrowed down my choices to three options...
Option 1: Samsung HL56A650 56" 1080p DLP Rear Projection, under $1100 Option 2: Panasonic TH-46PZ85u 46" 1080p Plasma, under $1100 Option 3: Panasonic TH-42PZ80u 42" 1080p Plasma, under $900 Option 1 and 2 are kind of a wash because they are the same price. Option 1 gives a bigger screen and uses much less power (180w vs 630w) but option 2 gives slightly better picture quality and no moving parts. (Better picture quality is because it is not being projected onto a screen that could be slightly skewed - therefore, lines will be straighter...supposedly.) Option 3 is obviously less expensive and is the option I will go with if I can talk my wife into letting me start looking for a front projector and screen to use for movies while keeping the smaller TV for normal use. Now I just have to wait on my tax refund to show up in my account before my wife and I make our final decision. We e-filed last night so hopefully it won't be more than a couple of weeks.
