Default 13 shorts...

"An Animated Tribute

Gather your family around your couch and grab your favorite Mickey sweets, because we’ve got the marathon for you: Walt Disney Animation Studios will celebrate Mickey’s cartoon legacy with the release of Celebrating Mickey, featuring 13 classic short films on Digital and Blu-ray this fall."

I can't make the link work...but if you google "celebrating mickey blu-ray" you'll find a link to D23 that starts with "JUST ANNOUNCED..."

I believe that is what the idea directly morphed into. But what a poor substitute. The animation is terrible. Something about mixing all the characters from different movies has always appealed to me. Aside from desperately wanting The Search for Mickey to be a reality, I have always wanted Disney World to install a dark ride that takes you through scenes from ALL of the animated films...even Black Cauldron. LOL.

I'm grateful to see a package of Disney shorts on Blu, but 13 cartoons is really paltry, especially since the collection is more than likely going to lean heavily on color ones.

Like you guys, I'll buy it to hopefully encourage meatier offerings.

Default Official 90th birthday portrait of Mickey

Yuck.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Disney revealed the official 90th birthday portrait of Mickey called “Spreading Happiness Around the World”. The unveiling happened during the panel “Celebrating 90 Years of Mickey Mouse with D23: The Official Disney Fan Club.”

The portrait is painted by renowned Disney animator Mark Henn. D23 and the Walt Disney Archives, in partnership with Walt Disney Animation Studios, commissioned Henn to paint Mickey’s official birthday portrait.

I wish Disney would simply reissue the Treasure Collections on Blu-Ray but me thinks they're be available on the Disney streaming service next year.

This Blu-Ray release of only 13 shorts feels very much like a token release. They're releasing it just to say they've released something while holding everything back for the streaming service.

I hope.

By and large Disney do such terrible hatchet jobs on their animation “restorations” for blu ray it’s probably best we’re not getting more.

I have a feeling it will consist of "Steamboat Willie", "Mickey and the Beanstalk", "Mickey's Christmas Carol", "The Prince and the Pauper", perhaps "Sorcerer's Apprentice", "Get a Horse" and 7 other shorts that have seen more airplay than most. So for the meantime I'm not getting too excited.

I think most of their restorations look great.

They don't need to be restored, Mr. Lutz. Disney takes care of their back catalog. You're upset about the masters and color timing and frozen grain or what have you...not the film preservation or saving the original camera negs. The animation library negs have been scanned and captured in 4k. The things people have problems with are the decisions made when creating the masters (again, the contrast, boosted colors, dust-busting, etc.)

I'm just about always down for more classic animation on Blu-Ray. The stuff on the Snow White Diamond Edition looked spectacular. So I'm doing a blind pre-order, hopefully they announce more soon.

And while Maltin may have said it's not happening, I would love to see a lot of the content they released to the Walt Disney Treasures line make it to Blu-Ray. It might be a small market, but the Zorro series on Blu-Ray would sell, as well as Dr. Syn, Alias The Scarecrow, Swamp Fox, El Fago Baca, the Davy Crockett serials, etc. Given the way Disney goes, I'd expect it to be something like Disney Movie Club exclusives.

I haven't seen quotes so I'm not sure what statements you are referring to. Malt in is certainly an expert on Disney, so he would have reliable insight.

I have a gut feeling that the discs would only contain 5-12 of the well-known shorts, while their digital/redeemed version would likely have every Mickey short produced and probably some bonus remastered Donald, Goofy, and Chip & Dale stuff digital only. They've done that with the digital codes for the Pixar shorts collection by having Runaway Brain DMA/ITunes only, and with the emphasis on digital and their planned streaming service, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they pulled that shit again.

Isn't this one of the collectible cards they're selling that you can rip the front off and "frame"? I saw them the other day at the department store (with all the other sickening mickey stuff). One of them was a literal frankenmickey.

I'm disappointed that this release is only a compilation of 13 shorts and not a complete set (a la Walt Disney Treasures), but still very excited to hear about this release nonetheless!

Let's hope that if this release sells well we will get a Donald Duck shorts collection Blu-ray for his 85th anniversary next year. Donald is my favorite Disney character, so I would absolutely love for that to happen!

He said he was told flat out "no" when wanting to continue the Disney Treasures line on Blu-Ray.

It sounds like a great idea and I don't understand why they dumped it.
There are dozens of new Mickey Mouse cartoons on the Mickey Shorts channel on YouTube.

I still have my VHS copy of 'The Spirit of Mickey' that commemorated Mickey Mouse's 70th anniversary twenty years ago.
