I've just started buying DVD again. I've gotten over my snobbishness, especially since I watch a lot of films on my laptop or tablet.

There are lots of great films that aren't on Blu-ray.

With that said, and to answer the original question, I only upgrade when it's a favorite film or one that particularly benefits from the upgrade in picture. For example, I wouldn't bother upgrading a Bridget Jones or Jerry Maguire.

I've had many pleasurable experiences watching films on the back of an airplane seat. Most often, a good story negates the need for pristine visuals.

I for one thought the newest anniversary edition Blu-ray of Jerry Maguire was quite good and actually very much worth the upgrade from DVD (or even a double dip from an old Blu-ray. Made from a new 4K scan and was really well reviewed.

Came with the soundtrack CD too which was a nice bonus.

Rarely do I buy both. I upgraded all of the original Evil Dead flicks, but that’s it. Technically Planet Terror as well, but the DVD is the Director’s Cut & the Blu is the complete theatrical Grindhouse.

Disney is a huge repeat offender when it comes to this. The following come to mind:

Muppet Christmas Carol
Pocahontas
The Lion King
All DMC exclusives

DVD to BD is an instant upgrade honestly, even if it's the same master. Granted that's easy for me to say as I sold most of my DVDs to move overseas a long time ago, so I didn't have to make that call very often. There are probably 80's b-movies and such I would have stuck with DVD for if I owned them.
