IV is broken at the scripting stage. No amount of cut footage or redone VFX is going to fix it.

I think there is a decent story in there but it is currently disjointed. It has all the ingredients to be a good film. Gene Hackman is back and seemed to be enjoying himself. The cut scenes of him were great.

As it stands the film is tarnished because it basically is chopped to pieces to such an extent that parts of the story don't flow, plots are not finished and some of the special effects are poor. I honestly believe that a completed version of this with modern effects would be fantastic. I think the story itself is actually pretty good. Nice to see Clark go back home and save the farm, little things like that interest me.

I just think it would be a nice tribute to both Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder to release a box set of the full version of four films.

I love how if enough time passes anything can somehow become "good" or "almost good" or "fixable"

This is nothing but nostalgia for Reeve. And his inane notion that the nuclear weapons were the actual problem -- and not the monstrous dictatorship that enslaved tens of million -- that wielded them.

This. It’s the only Superman film I can’t bring myself to watch again,

I think IV is fixable, but it would take reshoots too, not just better effects and deleted footage. And obviously there's no way to do reshoots.

According to this, anyway....given the fact this is still not official, I am thinking it could still be later, since the actual 40th is in December. Still late November would be nice, though.

I genuinely like Superman IV. There's something warm and cosy about its 80s Cannon tackiness.

Anyway, I hope everybody purchases Superman: The Movie day one so that this Batman stan can get the Burton/Schumacher films in 4K next year.

First Superman movie I saw in the cinema, I still love it purely for the nostalgia factor.

I think it'd be a fun 80's superhero romp if it weren't for a handful of super bad scenes and the embarrassing effects. As it is I still find it a fun cheesy mess.

8 year old me loved it when I rented it on video. It's still a fun pleasure.

Yes, but so do Russian-French people, such as the Salkinds. They should get the glory too for bringing superhero movies to the forefront.

And then there are US people like Richard Donner. SUPERMAN was his best work, bar none.

In other words, all people all over the world are created equal, so we should treat everybody as such.

This thoroughly confused me...

To be honest I didn't give much thought to the nationality of the guys running the company. I fail to see what relevance it has.

Nationality is irrelevant to making enjoyable films, people from all over the world have made films enjoyed by millions for decades.

Bottom line, Canon made thoroughly enjoyable films, not many great ones, but most of them enjoyable. Canon films meant you were always going to be entertained.

What the hell does them being Jews have to do with anything?

So much time has pass younger people today just are aware of the controversary the Salkind caused in Hollywood with the original SUPERMAN film.

They not being "American" was a big then back then. They took a unquily American property and produced it. No Amercian studio did. They brought the idea to American studios who turned it down at first. Even Warner did expect it to turn out the as good as it was. Which is why they silently worked with Donner, behind the scenes to take the film (while still in production) away from the Salkinds control).
There were rumblings back then from the studios who laughed at the Salkind for doing such an "American" film.
The Salkinds fought for the flim to be presented as the comic was, "Truth, justice and the American way."
The Salkinds were of Eastern European decent. Jewish, and Alexander, the father to Ilya, married a mexican woman. They lived in France at the time of the inception of the project. Ilya speaks 5 languages. They were very unamerican, and it's amazing how the production came out.
