I have a shelving shortage, too. Blu-rays get the most prominent placement while the dvds snake around my home in a pattern that is in alphabetical order, but is rather odd to behold.

Even with them in order, I can take a long time picking something to watch. The collection keeps growing making such decisions harder and harder.

Yeah finding things is my top priority. I like the idea of sorting by year or director name or whatever else, but then it would take me forever to find stuff. Alphabetical means boom there it is, every time, no worries.

I sort by Director/Actor/Film Series then by original release date. There's a lot of crossover like T1 & T2, should they be under James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger or part of the Terminator series. Cameron wins in this case.

I sort all my rock CDs in the same way, by Band/Artist then by year of release, just the way I do it.

Default Organizing your 4K UHD & Blu-rays...

I've been curious, I'm starting to buy 4K movies at of late since the Wife & I are getting a 4K TV very soon, I have a ton of blu rays and I'm just curious how folks organize them on their shelf? Do you lump them all together or separate them?

My 3D and 4K discs are separate from my Blu-rays. I then separate my Blu-rays by major labels (Arrow, Criterion, Shout! Factory, etc) and then all the rest that don't fit into those categories (if you are interested, check out my Blu-ray collection for all my categories). All are in alphabetical order.

I have a small book case next to my main TV in the living room that holds 3D, 4K and some Arrow and then the rest of the Arrow and Code Red Blu-rays are in the cabinets in the TV stand. The Criterion, other label discs and remainder of releases are stored in a shelving unit in my dining area (I don't have a big apartment).

Mine are worked in with regular blus wherever they belong. For example, animation, Disney, marvel universe, John wayne etc.

I lump everything together; DVD, Blu-ray, UHD... all together. I even keep digibooks and other cardboard cases in there, all of it together in alphabetical order. I'M A MONSTER!!!

I have my whole collection alphabetized, have one wall shelf for singles movies and one for boxed sets/TV shows. I don’t separate blus and UHDs.

I don’t separate them out myself. I usually group by film series or director and then alphabetical titles. At least for now.

Everything is separated. I have 1 wall for BD movies then boxsets, tv shows are separated. I have a bookcase strictly for UHD which is alphabetized.

I keep all min together, in no particular order, but I lump Director’s filmographies together. No order to the Directors, just how they’ll fit on the shelf.

I have my Blu-Rays, DVD's and 4k's separated.

Blu Box sets and TV series on on shelf, movies on another.

My Blu-Ray movies are sorted by Disney Animation, Disney Live Action, Movie Club Exclusives, Pixar, Marvel followed by various actors and finally alpha by series.

4K's are sorted by alpha by series.

4K and BDs together ad DVDs separate since their cases don't fit. Then each are grouped, DC, Marvel, Disney Animated, Romance, Westerns, series are put together, i.e. Star Wars, Terminator, Planet of the Apes and such. No alphabetizing.

I have two shelves for UHD's, one for steelbooks and the other three are BD's. The DVD's are on a separate set of shelves in another room.

Alphabetizing is for the weak.
