Is it just me, or is this movie being fueled by all the sequels it's ignoring?

The reporter bringing Michael the mask and Laurie waiting 40 years for revenge works for the audience, but it wouldn't work if this was really the first sequel since 1978.

In all seriousness, why not?

Someone killed your best friends and stalked you mercilessly. You stabbed him in the neck, the face, and the stomach and he still kept coming. You witnessed him shot six times and he still got up.

I'm not sure 40 years would erase that trauma or fear.

The reporter with the mask is a bit much, though. I'll give you that.

Look at the Zodiac Killer. People are fascinated by what happened because of the costume, taunting and fact that the got away. Even someone like Charles Manson who never killed anyone. People were always interested in his interviews in jail or when he was coming up for parole.

They are treating Michael in this movie like an infamous serial killer and true crime. You can bet that if someone actually did put on a mask and killed a bunch of babysitters in the 70s, it would be part of pop culture just like Zodiac.

Laurie knows that as long as he is alive, there's a chance he could escape and finish the job. I think the story totally works.

I looked on Wikipedia and it said Tim Alverson, with a link to this image from the soundtrack that shows his name in the credits. The names are small but you can make it out on the lower left.

Yeah, Alverson has plenty of experience editing many of the Blumhouse horror pictures.

Watching the international trailer, maybe I'm overanalyzing things but it feels like the documentary filmmaker is purposely trying to manipulate Michael into escaping and going after Laurie again to prove and validate his thesis.
