I never would have fathomed spending $3500 on a television, because I usually don’t have the money for it. But thanks to some writing gigs and having the opportunity to pay all the debt we had off this year, I’m treating myself. Still, when I walked out of the store I was still asking myself, “What the hell did I just do?” But I watch movies and play video games like my life depends on it, and my 4K collection grows larger by the week. I want picture perfect accuracy. I want that new chip. I want highlights to be resolved as well as they can be.

Over the last month I’ve had my mind pulled in a million different direction. I heard too much about the Samsung Q9FN crushing blacks, and although it’s seemingly gotten better after firmware updates and increasing the brightness notch by one, it appears to be inherent to the way the set works. Samsung blows past the HDR curve and goes through the roof for the sake of brightness, and that irks me. The inaccurate HDR curve on their set is also one major reason why I couldn’t choose the Vizio P Quantum series either, as they sort of do the same thing but they don’t crush blacks, and Vizio will undoubtedly give me worse DSE than some other brands. OLED caught my eye, but as a gamer, I really don’t want to deal with retention and burn-in, and I hate how OLED’s deal with motion anyway… too choppy for me during torture test material.

So, it basically came down to going for a 900F, a Z9F, or possibly a Z9D if the Z9F proved to be extremely disappointing. But I have a feeling the Z9F is going to be a fine television. Sony has the best processing around, no question about it. It doesn’t really matter to me that it likely has less zones than a Z9D. I’m certain this set will produce fantastic imagery with fairly solid accuracy without sacrificing much in the way of highlights, and do a great job with HDR in general.

Been a long month of crushing my head over what to buy but I know I made the right choice now because I’m actually excited.

Yeah, dropping that much coin will always give you pause, but spending that much on a Sony will net you a very, very, very good TV that should keep pace with anything else released in the next couple of years - I know the ZD9 has.

PS

You actually getting paid for writing makes you my hero.

I’ve written for a couple of video game related magazines that had some distribution in certain parts of the world… was responsible for half of each issue. I’ve been able to leverage that into a children’s chapter book that’ll be based on a popular video game character. Never went to college for writing. Just fell in with the right person/persons who liked my writing and wanted me on their team.

But it’s definitely not all it’s cracked up to be. Just like anything else, it’s work, and considering I have a full time job otherwise and a wife and two kids, I wonder what I’m even doing sometimes. I love doing the occasional podcast or op-ed piece or DVDTalk review, but the time constraints for the paid projects I’m doing are tough. And the pay isn’t phenomenal. And you’re always wondering when a publisher is going to get around to paying you. Or even get around to providing you with a pdf document of the finished product, let alone a physical one. Like, if freelance writing was my livelihood, I’d have pulled all my hair out a long, long time ago.

A lot of people have fancy dreams of getting contracts and making a living doing what they love and getting their foot in the door and having things just fly off from there. That is so, so far from reality it’s not even funny.

And yet… I still love to write, so I’m still breaking my back hoping for the BIGGER break one day.

It's not that I'm imagining you reclining in a fur coat on the deck of your super yacht as you wind your away along the French Riveria or anything, but I've never gotten so much as a penny for a single word I've ever written so yeah: still my hero.

That's pretty cool. Sounds like you've at least managed to make a few bones from a side hobby you truly love. You'd be surprised (or maybe you're not?) how extremely rare it is for people to actually follow through with something like that, so good for you man - Well done!

From the AVSforum regards the Z9F

Quote:
From Crutchfield

detachable dual-footer stand ("footprint" is 47"W x 12-3/8"D)
wall-mountable (bracket not included)
57-1/4"W x 33"H x 2-11/16"D (35-11/16"H x 12-3/8"D on stand)
So I estimate toed in to be 43-45” wide
I’m hoping 43” so a 65” will fit my current stand.
Maybe like in the Sony A8F(vs AF8's leaning stand) we may see similar for the 65inch Z9F. In a future model. I hope one is announced at CES 2019.

I bit. I went to the Magnolia at my local Best Buy this evening and pre-ordered the 65” Z9F. Might be a couple/few weeks before I get it though.
A week before you(mzuperman) PreOrdered your 65 Z9F
I credit card ordered and pay for a 65 inch Z9D. Because it had a small footprint stand. Perfect for my current AV Table setup. Which I absolutely love and had for many many years and had put many TV upgrades on it. But 3 days after ordering they said they can't get it. At the deal price I paid. I gather 3D is making Z9D premium priced. And recient orders are really minimizing stock.

For our family we will wait the few months for CES 2019.
Hoping for new model addition 65 inch Z9F with small footprint stand. I also believe HDMI 2.1 will be all over the CES 2019 Landscape. That would make Z9F Magical, Heavenly to have in our Living room.

I doubt they’ll make a cosmetic stand change to the Z9F but I appreciate your concern over it. I definitely had to measure my current stand and make sure it’s support the width of the Z9F’s stand, and fortunately, it does. I wouldnt be ablw to go 75” though. In my opinion, all tv’s should use a center-based stand.

I just mean a stand that is in the center of the tv instead of on the sides, like what the Z9D has.

It's not a big deal for me one way or the other, but I'm curious what style of stand(s) Sony will be going with for their LCDs next year. The "duck feet" (as many like to call them) of the X900F and Z9F didn't go over too well.

There are after market table top tv stands available on Amazon that use the wall mount holes on the back of the set and are a center mount style for those with limited space for around $40. So don't let those wide spaced legs deter you from the tv you really want.

50 inch to 59.9 inch WIDE stands that would be compatable with 65, 75 inch screens Z9F's.

https://www.target.com/c/tv-stands-e...5zktv?lnk=5059

For our Living Room location only a 52 inch wide dark stand would work fitting our current area. Holding many AV device boxes using remotes thru glass doors. This one is Very Interesting:

Bell'O WAVS99152 52" TV Stand. You can google it.

Just for a heads up to everyone on this thread. Someone at AVS forum started a Z9F owner's thread. He purchased the 75 inch and it should be setup by 9pm his time(whatever that is). So finally we're going to get a consumer review.
