An early version of the poster for the movie had the tag line 'if only they'd left him alone.' Elmore Leonard reportedly had a doctored version of that in his office with the tag line changed to 'If only they'd left the script alone.'

To add insult to injury, the film flopped so badly it went straight to video in most international territories - and that's where the original cut apparently turned up. A few scenes from that version, including the original ending, turned up on Youtube, while the BBC showed the original cut in 1989 but never repeated it.

So there is an actual cut of the Burt Reynolds original version out there?

I'd love to see it but what are the odds? Would be a great tribute to the actor if his original edit was released alongside the theatrical. And a real treat for fans of the film!

Well, it was in 1989. We know that some stuff was lost in the Universal vault fire in 2008, but since that version was seen in Europe it may still be out there (the BBC used to keep prints of all the films they showed even after they lost the rights, but that policy changed when they switched over to digital masters). Even an SD version would be very welcome. Since clips turned up on Youtube it may be that if the master is lost, someone has a tape copy that could be used in the way that Shout used an off-air tape of the TV version of Two-Minute Warning for their Bluray. I'm sure even the pickiest people would reluctantly admit that seeing it in lower quality just to have it was better than not having it at all.

Excellent! Saw this in theater in 74 when I was 10. A quirky and unusual film. Filmed near where I currently live in Upstate SC. In fact, the film had it's world red carpet premiere at the old Astro Theater in Clemson SC.

I'm with PowellPressburger here—I hope this one warrants a new scan, not a dated HD transfer, since presumably all current BD releases are from the same scan on the Canadian 2011 release that, though I haven't seen it, I assume could be improved upon given its age and the time it's taken for someone to pick it up for US (or UK) release.

I'm going to infer from the non-response from KLI that the KL release will be from an old master, unfortunately.

As noted, the supporting cast is wide and well, very supporting ;-) Don't miss the John Landis interview, among other things he explains why Kirk Douglas didn't use a stage slap when he slapped Stallone three times.

Oscar is a fun movie with great performances all around.
