I don't care if they are calling it a re-make or not in the end it's all the same. Most likely a young MTV producer just saw the movie a few months ago on Turner Classic and said :

"Great let's do another movie but it's the a re-make but we will just copy the original scene by scene but truly it's not a re-make and we will use as actor the latest bumble gum actors to appeal to the Nintendo generation. We will have a budget of 5 millions, the kids will come and see it cause their favorite pop idol are in the movie and we will make 50-60 millions."

It is a different take on the story -- I'm not saying it's going to be good, I'm just saying it isn't a remake of any prior work.
