I also got myself Severin's release of Zombi Holocaust and the 88 Films release of Creepshow 2. I'm planning on getting Scream Factory's Halloween II remaster, Evil Dead 2 UHD and Blue Underground's Zombie remaster as well.

These will be my October/Halloween movies for this year (except Zombie, due out in November)!
Oh man, I have already gone crazy with horror BDs in the last month or so. Blue Underground, Synapse, Code Red, Scream Factory, Umbrella - so much stuff. I can’t stop!

As with some other recent UHDs--Christine, for example--I suspect HDR and WCG will carry most of the load and be truly beasts of burden. Maybe Halloween, with its stark nighttime contrasts and the all important odd flash of color will be the ideal title to tout the merits of the new tech.

There's no telling what transfer Tommy Lee Wallace was looking at when he mentioned in his commentary from the 35th in the SF boxed set that the famous reveal of The Shape over Laurie's shoulder at the top of the stairs looked a little muted...and I was looking for a little more pop from the ol' Shatner mask in that scene, too, so maybe some judicious use of HDR will get that shot looking its best.

Yes, that’s the shot I mentioned a few pages back. Cant wait to see that shot on my C8. I’ll have to give that commentary a listening to at some point.

Great, informative track from integral members of the Halloween team. Carpenter's not in the room, but his methods, sensibility and overall contribution to the film are frequently discussed.

For some reason in my previous, I referred to The Shape Reveal shot as infamous, when I actually meant famous. Corrected!

If that's the case on Christine it's likely because it's an IP or 2k scan. The Indicator edition on BD says it's a 2k scan. Usually 35mm shows a lovely detail increase from the resolution bump, if it was scanned in 4k.

I prefer the 35th anniversary Blu-ray over the 4K UHD.

The UHD of Christine has different framing, so a new scan was made. And there's no reason to doubt that it's a 4K scan. The question remains, did they use the OCN this time, or the same IP (which was the rumored source for Indicator, etc.)? Geoff's hunch is on the IP. But the UHD is surely not a 2K upscale.

I like the richer colours of the UHD, going by that video, and I have a copy on order with Diabolik, but it would appear that the following article is incorrect regarding a new 4K scan that only made it's premier in August at Frightfest

Quote:
Halloween is getting a major re-release, complete with a 4K makeover. It debuts at this month’s FrightFest, the UK’s premiere horror festival, from where we view it.

The Indicator only refers to it as a "2K restoration". That transfer was physically scanned in 4K as per Sony's in-house directive (as Grover Crisp has said, even when using lesser elements they always start with a 4K scan) but it was finished at 2K. And I'm not just guessing here as there's actually a "4K scan list" from Sony that was leaked as part of the hack a while back and Christine is on it.

At best, Sony went back to the vaulted 4K scans (they usually back up the raw scans as well as the final remaster) to produce the Christine 4K UHD transfer which would account for the extremely slight variations in framing and the relative lack of improvement in high-frequency detail between the two versions, providing I'm remembering correctly about the IP being used.

It's not an OCN, no way.

From those pics the UHD does look really nice. Foliage looks better.

I haven't watched it yet, I was going by what others said. Geoff explains it well above though, that makes sense.

Target has this on their website for $14.99! I'm tempted to order it at that price, but I would prefer to purchase in store to ensure I get a pristine slip cover. I'm not really into slips, but this one is sick.

It appears to be yet another revision, what a surprise: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...2#post15325152

I'm not complaining though, I'm very much of the opinion that film is a moving target, and as much as I like the 35th transfer the green of the grass & foliage always looked a bit too verdant for the time of year it's supposed to be set (though they can't do anything about seemingly having lots of palm trees in suburban Illinois ), so if the 40th has toned them down then I'm not gonna argue with that.

If Carpenter said that both he & Dean Cundey wanted the outdoor daytime scenes to feel like Chinatown, then they are SUPPOSED to have the warmer orange feel to them. I feel like a per scene restoration has been necessary for a very long time, but we keep getting the entire movie with one single color timing throughout. I really love the timings on the '99 THX DVD. The night scenes have all of the blue in tact, and the day scenes have a better warmer autumn feeling to them.

Also, there's no free shipping under 35 bucks.
