Forgive me for asking a basic question, but is there any reason at all to think that orange filter look of the old DVD is how the movie was meant to be seen? Or is it just a case of people liking that DVD and wanting its look used despite it not being accurate to Carpenter/Cundy's intentions? Honest question, I really don't know.

Many probably saw it for the first time on DVD and are using that as reference. I do recall it having an orange tint when it aired on AMC when I was younger but that was well before DVD.

What are even Cundey's intentions as to how the film is supposed to look? I don't think even he knows.

Hah, that's a fair point after The Thing debacle.

Yep, exactly. The trouble is, Cundey approved BOTH the 1999 and 2013 color gradings, so there is no “final word” on how the film is “supposed” to look now. it essentially comes down to personal preference at this point. I prefer the 1999 grade as it feels more like fall to me, and it’s closer to the color scheme I grew up with. Accurate or not, original intent or not, it’s how I like watching Halloween. Then again, I also prefer the TV scenes as a part of the film, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

From a non 4k stream on a non 4k display, I doubt we're seeing the UHD as it should be. I don't think it's wise to make a definitive comparison from that video.

One thing that irks me about the 35th anniversary is that the main theme plays during the menu setup which kills the impact for when the movie starts, so I make sure my receiver is on zero volume for the menu, press play then turn up volume. Its a close one. I just have time to get the right volume before it starts.

While it doesn't bother me too much, I agree with the sentiment. The theme really is impactful when the movie starts.

Forgot to order this one with in-store pickup and sure enough Best Buy is toying with me again. Just got my shipping notice, which usually means I'll get my order in 2 days, but with pre-orders BB always ships at a snail's pace so I probably won't get into until next Thursday or something, at which point I'll be like:

It does hype the colors too much, and there are other problems with that disc.

My understanding is the color timing for the 1999 DVD was a knowingly revisionist color timing done by someone else (colourist Adam Adams) and signed off on by Cundey on that basis; a kind of what we might have done had we the technology to spot colour trees back then etc.

It was the first release I bought of the film and while a fan of the look I've never held it as a reference for what the film should look like or looked like theatrically.
The trouble now is some people do, often decrying the lack of brown and orange that the trees are "supposed to have".

The timing of the UHD (from the limited evidence we have available at this point) looks like it might actually be similar to the old laser disc, it had similar deeper darker greens.
The 35th blu-ray was also closer to the LD look, albeit more desaturated.

Halloween( like most perennial classics) has had so many looks on home video that a lot of people have different favorites and opinions about it. I've even seen those (who had obviously only ever seen the original Blu) who hated the "modern blue push" on the night scenes, reinstated on the 35th release...which was of course one of the defining attributes of the original photography...old Dean loved his blue gels back then.

I may be pulling this from my behind... but I feel like I remember an interview at the time saying John did sit in on the 35th anniversary release with Dean, remarking that he could see details in the film now that he couldn't see at the time of its original release or something along them lines.

Although I never see this mentioned when folks are discussing the various releases/color timings so maybe I just imagined it!

Neither looks like original 35mm prints. To my eyes, the THX has much more pleasant colors. But UHD will be superior in all other aspects, resolution, scan from the OCN, proper contrast, HDR, nice film look, etc. Color grading somewhere in between the two, would be close to what it looked like in 1978.

Give me the UHD now!
