I guess what it all comes down to is all these films we mentioned has had an impact on the creation of the slasher genre. Haha

That is not the case with audio hiss. There is nothing in it.

Grain in not artifact in that sense.

Sure, we all have preferences, but just sayin'.
Grain is definitely not an artifact, but tone mapping can essentially transform grain into an artifact by amplifying it to an unnatural level on lower nit sets. This is why we are sometimes seeing some complaints like "why is dolby vision so grainy on my OLED?".

If you are referring to me, 3 seconds of Google (see attached)

Just put these terms in google and plenty of complaint threads come up across multiple forums:

However, if you don't keep "teaching", then old flawed thinking returns and I think has happened again. In other words, DNR was defeated (for the most part) and the success of quality Blu-rays quieted the DNR discussion for several years. So that success was also part failure given what we are now seeing.

A new format is release and low and behold, it rears its ugly head again requiring new/more education. However, I'm finding a lot of UHD BD owners who complain about film grain a hell of a lot more stubborn compared to the first people getting into BD 10 years ago.
Yes, I've mentioned that several times, how expectations are summarily reset for each new format. Is HDR playing into how grain is perceived? For sure. But at the end of the day this ALWAYS happens when new tech comes along. Complaints...overcorrection...then finally some sort of equilibrium. We hoped that stuff like Batman Begins and Grease weren't going to be the harbingers of a new era of DNR but unfortunately it looks as though that's exactly what's going to happen.

Also must he considered as hardware improves over time and 1000nit TVs become the standard, the concern over tonemapping on low nit displays should subside and hopefully the DNR with it. Currently though 1000nit+ TVs are the exception not the norm.

IMO the difference here is unlike people just complaining about grain because they dont like grain, there actually is a process afoot here that is amplifying the grain unnaturally/excessively due to display hardware limitations.

It's not splitting hairs. It's just the basic facts of the situation.
So what you’re saying is that they also could’ve included a mono track of an entirely different film as long as it’s an English Dolby Digital Mono track.

Default Video Quality

When everyone gets to check out their copy, please let me know what you think of the video quality! How is the color grading? The sharpness? Is this the definitive copy on home video so far? Is it an improvement over the 35th Anniversary Edition? I get mine next week, so I'm anxious to hear what everyone thinks. So far reviews on other sites are very positive in this regard. The one on here was positive but confused me a bit as to whether or not it was an improvement upon the last releases.

Thanks everyone, and enjoy!

It's Halloween, everyone's entitled to one good transfer.

What I find strange is that the stinger when Michael pops out from the back seat in Annie’s car was changed but the stinger when he pops out of the door and grabs Bob wasn’t changed. Both of these stringers are virtually identical on the mono but for the 7.1 mix only the one in Annie’s car was changed.

I personally don't get a "very positive" vibe from the reviews I've read. I get more of a not worth the upgrade vibe due to only a slight increase in detail and desaturated colors.

FYI amazon has reopened taking orders (in stock soon) for the 10 disc set that has Halloween BD with the new transfer and original mono, only $39.99. Its a big step up from your 2007 disc and you also get the other Halloween movies, too:

Is there a list somewhere that documents all the audio changes between the mono and 7.1? So far I know about:

The Halloween theme during the opening credits has some additional harmonizing chords. I actually think this track sounds better in the 7.1. If these added layers are present in the mono they seem to be buried. Also, the 7.1 sounds closer to how the official soundtrack sounds.

Added thunder and rain sounds in the scene with Loomis and the nurse driving to Smith’s Grove.

“Laurie’s Theme” cue that’s heard when she’s in her classroom starts a few seconds later.

Right after Annie shouts, “Hey jerk, speed kills!”, the audio track was “corrected” so that the music no longer suddenly changes to a higher pitch as heard in the mono. Even if the pitch change was unintentional, I still like it. Gives a strange feeling to the scene.

The sound effect when Michael suddenly sits up in the backseat of Annie’s car has been changed.

The part where Michael slices Annie’s neck has added a stinger in addition to the one that was already present on the mono.

Cricket sounds have been changed which apparently sound more similar to the crickets in Halloween II.

Anyone know of any other changes/additions?
