Bowers is saying it has the original 70mm 6-track in 5.1. That’s just FINE by me for original audio. No way is this not being played at my house on Day One.

Of course including both cuts and both sound formats is out of the question.

There is the possibility that the DD 5.1 backup is indeed the original 6-track audio (seems like Warners are moving away from lossless 5.1 backups, which would be a shame in this case if the 5.1 is the 6-track), but then it seems strange that the theatrical disc would have the 2.0 on top, if that disc has indeed been remastered as well. I say that because the DTS-HD MA 5.1 and 2.0 on that disc would appear to mirror what's on the existing theatrical cut Blu-ray. Hey ho, it's all a load of bollocks.

So, it's just the Theatrical Cut, right? I guess I can live with that. I still want to buy the 3-hour cut on Blu Ray either way for collection's sake.

I'm definitely getting this day one. I used to care about having the original mono or 2 channel matrix surround on my 4K's until I realized I never even watch it this way. Give me ATMOS or DTS-X to go with the HDR or Dolby Vision.

the original 70mm mix was actually 4.2 - tests were done in split stereo surround, but it didn't ultimately go out as such.

Well, the original mix in 640 kb/s DD 5.1 is better than nothing. Pity Warners couldn't at least switch to 1 Mb/s DD+ if they're worried about the space that the DTS-HD MA backups are taking.

The movie just wasn't shot to 'pop'. There will be colour, of course there will, but Geoffrey Unsworth's super-diffused style coupled with the anamorphic glass of the time meant less contrast and more of a gauzy, hazy look. Could Warners crank it up to 11? Yeah I guess, but I don't think they will so don't expect demo-worthy eye candy. Will it represent STM's original photography with as much clarity as the source can muster? I believe it will, and going from the original negative could yet unveil more detail than has been seen up until now. I'm VERY excited about seeing it in 4K.
