As I live and breathe, they dug out the original six-track. I also wish it was lossless, but this will do. Awesome.

True, but "4.2" can be formatted closely enough to 5.1.

The existing theatrical cut BD has the original audio, but it sounds to me like a straightforward 2-channel stereo rendering, without any of the matrixing from the Dolby tracks.

Just looking at the back cover brings tears to my eyes: a dream come true for me. I've been crazy about this movie since I was 3 years old...

I do have to say that I am a little disappointed that the 2000 Donner cut is not included in 4K, but still this is a must have as it's one of my favorite movies of all time.

So let's list the pros and cons of this release. At least as we know them so far

Pros
Superman: The Movie IN 4K

Cons
No 2000 Expanded cut

I think the pros outweigh the cons on this one. Day one release for me.

Con - it's lossy

The EC has to be rebuilt in 4K, which is gonna be a "Blade Runner" type effort. I don't know if WB is willing to sink that sort of money into doing a new restoration and reconstruction, but it's obviously possible to use the theatrical cut restoration they have done for this release as the foundation.

Pro: Love the chemistry between Reeve and Kidder.
Con: So sad Christopher and Margot aren't around for this.

Wasn't the expanded version finished on film? If so, I would think they could do a pretty straightforward scan like for any other photochemically finished movie.

Has it been confirmed that this flick will have a Dolby Atmos track?

There was nothing in the email sent to me this morning, from Warner Bros.,
indicating that this flick would have Atmos.

Warner doesn't branch UHD, do they? It's usually one cut or nothing for them. Maybe if this sells extremely well they'll consider it.

I'm not a fan of the Donner cut. The theatrical cut is really the only one I care about. The extended is a nice plus.

Again, though, I think they do. Prints were made of the Expanded Version (I saw one in San Antonio in 2001). They may have used a dupe negative or something, but I'm pretty sure the thing was finished on film. It could be scanned and presented separately in 4K.

Seamless branching probably would reveal a slight dip in quality, but it wouldn't be an upscale.

Look a page or two back - Viking61 and myself posted the back cover denoting Dolby Atmos
