As far as I know, Lucas started the "no opening credits" that some movies are now following (BB, TDK, Benjamin Button). And how can you deny the opening sequence? We're thrust into the middle of a rebellion, there's a damsel in distress, people getting shot, and the legendary Darth Vader makes his appearance. Other than that, I'd have to go with every Lord of the Rings film. Each edition begins with something fantastic (The battle of Mt. Doom, Gandalf vs. Balrog, Smeagol coming upon the ring and making his descent into the creature Gollum). Other great opening sequences.. Gangs of New York (fantastic and unique "battle" sequence), Kill Bill... I'll think of more later.
