Default Sword of the Stranger anime!

Sorry if this has been posted before, but the search function does not work for this forum on any of my browsers... I can't even find threads I have started.

Anyway this anime looks amazing, too bad the japanese blu-ray has no english subs. How long do we have to wait for this in the U.S.?!

It's in the works. Hopefully it will come out in 2009 along with The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

Yea, I can't wait for this title too. Heard the fight animation is off the chain. I'm predicting a March or April release on this one since Ghost in the Shell 2(same studio) has a Januray release.

For fans of "Sword of the Stranger", I recently interviewed director Masahiro Ando.

The film will be debuting at select theaters on February 5th. One night only. But I look forward to the Blu-ray release of this film!

I saw this in a press screening here in the UK in October. It's superb - in line with live-action classics such as the Baby Cart or Zatoichi series, as well as a small number of HK 70s classics which involved both Chinese and Japanese combatants. People looking for a more realistic Ninja Scroll or simply top-class anime fight work should check this out. Easily some of the best work from studio BONES in years.

As a hard 15 (UK)/R-rated (US) feature it's the best anime I saw last year; however, for something more accessible to a wider audience, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was THE best anime I saw last year. Great work from MADHOUSE, following on from the brilliant Paprika, which was also adapted from a novel by the same author. Pretty sure if you like one you'll like the other.

But yeah, go see Sword of the Stranger if you want cool action.

"The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" was very good but my pick for best anime release (storywise) that I saw in 2008 would have to go to "5 centimeters Per Second". If you can find that DVD for cheap, get it! Hopefully with a lot of titles from ADV going to FUNimation, maybe there is a chance to see it on BD. As for "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time", definitely would love to see that on Blu-ray as well but the DVD releases were pretty solid.

We never got around to releasing 5 Cms here at ADV UK before we were shut down and stock transferred to LDMS. You're absolutely right about FUNImation, the last I heard, they would be the ones to talk to about a US re-release of the title.

I just want permission to do the UK release... still not happening after over six months of trying.

Ya this is a really good anime movie. Some great action and animation. Not sure if I'll have time to check out in the theater but I'll buy the US blu-ray when it comes out.

Sword of the Stranger is being shown at select Showcase Cinema location at 7:30pm February 5, 2009.Tickets are $12.50 each.If plans hold, i'll be attending the show at the W.Spfld, MA. location.

As for the best animation of 2008 i agree with a few above that, that title would easily be "5 Centimeters Per Second".Makoto Shinkai's work becomes more impressive and touching with each new film he creates.Anyone interested in the artwork of Shinkai's three masterworks should pick up "The Sky of the Longing for Memories".It's available from Amazon Japan.A little pricey, but well worth it in my opinion.

5CM PER SECOND is being prepped for a re-release (and likely a Blu release) but with a new dub as they likely don't own the rights to the ADV dub. According to this site:
http://www.fanboyreview.net/

"Last year Matt Greenfield said at a con that Bandai had 5cm per Second, and earlier this week someone put up an acting credit via Bang Zoom.

After talking to a few people, Bang Zoom definately has redubbed it for Bandai, likely for a Blu-ray. Not 100% sure on the Blu-ray front, but from what I’ve been told, that seems to be the plan. Can’t say if the old dub will be on it or not."

So glad this is finally being rereleased! I've been hoping for a while now as I missed out on the original run.

Why? Sword of the Stranger is a pretty high-quality production and would likely appeal to general Samurai film fans.

So.. because you're not interested in watching anime, that means it doesn't belong here? There's always that one person who has to throw it under the bus and be like this. It happened when the Pokemon Movies 1-3 Blu-ray thread came out back in February too. I'm sure the live action Rurouni Kenshin movie will be a big problem due to it being based on an anime series, lol.

That's awesome. I'll be happy to support this without having to pay crazy third party prices for the OOP version.

I have the dvd of this & will definitely upgrade to the blu-ray this time, missed out on the last one. Gorgeously animated, bloody fight scenes & a pretty compelling story too, love this!
