Ok. I’m playing Dunkirk. This... this is unexpected. If they fixed random playback issues by figuring out it was some hdmi stability thing fixed via firmware, I no longer feel compelled to look for a new device as my main. A bit premature yet but, thanks Sony!

Many thanks for the tip!! I nabbed one at my local Target earlier for dat $89.98 price!! Waaay cheaper than the ones on Amazon even used, and certainly far less than that Panny player ppl have suggested to me (which i've seen go for way more absurd money than I want to spend on something that will go drastically go down in price shortly after).

So far, i'm lovin the X800! Plays region free 50hz and PAL content just swell unlike my BDD-S370, which always gave a black screen and locked right up. I've heard a bug with the video modes on recent Sony players that enable NR by default on 1080p output and did notice right away. However, when during playback and you bring up the display and hit video settings, select Custom 1 or 2 and the NR won't be on by default at all, so the fine grain and such would return would at last

As for the apps, aside from having to rewind a few times to get optimal quality at the start of a title, run fine as well even in 24p mode most of the time (though it's naturally chop city depending on the source on various movies and TV shows played on the Prime Video and Vudu apps).

Tomorrow, i'm gonna grab up a UHD title from one of the libraries I go to when I pick up stuff during lunch, and see how the HDR-SDR conversion fares on my equipment.

The Panasonic 820 won't be forever @ $499. It is $449 right now, and it won't be next year till it's $399. And next year check for sales around $299.

But why would you do that, even for $269 when the Sony you just bought was only $89?
That's still three times less.

Comes Black Friday we might see the Sony X800 clearance price @ $44.99?
The Panasonic 820 @ $369.99?

Who knows tomorrow...

I seriously am having the worst luck with UHD players. My first Sony X800 stopped playing UHDs entirely. I got a replacement and it distorts and turns to stuttery digital artifacts on random discs here and there. My backup LG player has tiny little stutters a few times during a movie. It's maddening.

I tested Wonder Woman and it still didn't play, so sadly this didn't fix that for me. I could try some others but I doubt it'll be different. Maybe I'll power cycle it again after the update though. Didn't try that.

Cool someone had a positive outcome!

Since Black Friday is just around the corner, it would seem he doesn't see discount pricing for the 820, but I guess will know sooner than later.

Freezing and whatnot. Lot of people reported that issue with Dunkirk on the X800. Works for others though. It works fine on my Xbox One X though.

great find. My stores are mostly sold out and a couple have it for $149 on clearance. Which isn't a great deal because they were being sold for that price back on Black Friday '17.

Using the thread's search engine and "subtitle" as my search word, I found this:

Please get on it Sony!
And two posts later this:

So it appears the answer is no

I can confirm it does, as I just watched some Doctor Who special features on it the other day and they played fine. It doesn't convert PAL to NTSC though, so your TV needs to accept a PAL signal.

Even with no sound system hooked up, this player still gives me audio dropouts. I had one tonight watching Halloween around the hour 26 minute mark when Loomis sees the kids running out of the house. I have dropouts on some discs when BD Audio Mix is turned OFF, and I have them with others when BD Audio Mix is turned ON. I have no idea what to do, other than toggle on or off the setting every time I have an audio dropout.

1. Do a reset, factory default.
2. Turn the player Off.
3. From tne Sony use one HDMI cable directly to your TV and a second one directly to your receiver.
4. Turn the player On.
5. Set the BD Audio Mix: OFF, and leave it there permanently.
6. Clean 'Halloween' disc, or others that have audio dropouts.
7. Play the disc(s) and check.

Tried that, multiple times. And like I said, even with no sound system hooked up, just the tv speakers in my OLED.
