Just watched this. It looks like a contrasty HDR grade of the 35th edition. So everyone is saying it is a new remaster? So did they just do, a higher res scan of the same restoration or what?, because the color timing and overall look is the same. And those who are disappointed that they didnt base the 1080p from the 4K are silly IMO because that would simply look like the 35th disc! Admittedly, they should have included the 35th BD since it would have provided a nice comparison/companion between the two discs. Only reason for 2007ish disc is for different extras.

Got my copy for $13 and really enjoyed the presentation. I never bought the bluray or DVD, but I did see this movie on the big screen as a teen! Guess I've never been a big fan of this movie cause I've always viewed it as a teen slasher but now it's another Carpenter classic for me. My fav Carpenter movie is The Thing by a wide margin

The best I had seen this movie was in HD w/lossy audio. The detail in the dark scenes is amazing, where the HD version the dark scenes are all washed out and you can't make out anything. The audio was the best part tho never heard it sound so good!

We get it. My God man. How many times are you going to say the same thing? Seriously. You’ve made your point. Between this and the Evil Dead thread it’s your full time job.

They did a 4k restoration back for the 35th they just did a hdr grading for the new disc.

The theatrical re-releases do not advertise 4K either just 40th anniversary. I’m betting it was done at 2K at most then Lionsgate took this master from Anchor Bay’s archives and upscaled it to 4K.

35th look stretched vertically in comparison to UHD. So if it's the same scan, then they adjusted proportions.

Really? Another title where there is grasp-at-straw level of speculation suggesting a cheap upscale? Blow me down.

Or also known as another lowkey day of trolling on the 4K board

I bought the Halloween 4k blu ray a few days ago just to have for now until I can finally afford a 4k player and tv. I watched the original Halloween in theaters also. I have a question for the people that were able to pop in their 4k discs and watch the blu ray. When you hit play and before the movie starts does a Trancis logo and Compass logo appear on the screen?

I wasn’t trolling, I was speculating since no news has come of a 4K restoration for this film.

Well it was released on a 1080p blu so even if it was a 4k scan they may not have marketed it as 4k.

Cant be too unhappy with the video on the 35th, regardless:

I never said I was unhappy with it, I thought it looked lovely and I'm aware that Messrs. Cundey and Carpenter oversaw the process. I'm just saying that I don't recall seeing any confirmation it was done at 4K, and IIRC the DCPs of that version were also 2K.

I ask because the look is the same, the framing is the same. If it was done from scratch there would be more of a difference, in the framing at the very least.

This is quite common. Youll see it a lot when looking at DVDs and BDs taken from same source. Look at Blue Undergroud titles and even that new Perversion Story. I guess it is a scaling thing.

I wouldn’t get caught up in numbers and specs. It’s the end result and how it looks that matters and it looks great. I don’t think it’s the same master as the 35th anniversary.

Saw a 35mm original print at Alamo Drafthouse last week. Even though it had that red tint that old prints often get, you could still see the colors pretty well. They did not really look like either of the Blu-ray releases or the current UHD, although the 35th Blu / 40th UHD is definitely the closer transfer. To me it seems like they drained a little too much color out though.

The U.K. Frightfest festival showed the movie earlier this year in a 4K DCP and it was touted as a new 4K restoration. So there's that.

Ive also seen sites reviewing the 4K UHD stating that the video was "derived from the 35th anniversary restoration" but no lead to where they go that info.
