I think the music has a lot to do with that, the score is great and used very well with the visuals (which has always been a way to my heart). Also the trick Hunt plays toward the end with the mask is a great moment IMO.
Music is often the last refuge where I'll find something to carry me over the line with a poor movie but in Mi2 even the music annoys me, it's either Hans doing Gladiator again (he got Lisa Gerrard back in to wail all over it, for fudge's sake) or is some awful rock shite, to no doubt fit with the Limp Bizkit vibe. Heck of it is I dig the LB take on the theme song but the rest, no thank 'ee.

Haven't seen an M:I movie since....I want to say 3 (but that might be wrong).

If I'm sort of re-imersing myself in these types of action movies (where I just want to be entertained and whatnot--I get enough of the in-depth and thought-provoking movies that sometimes I just want some good entertainment), where should I look in the M:I department?

Ghost Protocol, Rogue Nation, and Fallout (still in theaters) is when they start to feel more modern, fun, blockbuster style, with continuous characters. They hold up better since the stunts and action scenes are well done.

First is OK but classic and must watch. I loved III because of its style and villain, but some of it feels a little B-movie. Still solid.

II is just terrible

Yeah, I know I've seen 1 and II, can't quite remember if I actually did watch III.

So it's your opinion that Ghost Protocal, Rogue Nation, and Fallout are good ones to buy of the set? I'm pretty sure I'm not going to buy all of them, but if I wanted to start out with three of them, you'd say those three? I mean I've heard a LOT of good things about Fallout, so I was already thinking of getting that one, but then I wondered if I would have had to have seen any of the others to know/understand the character dynamics and all of that.

I would watch GP and RN before Fallout, yes. It's more continuous from a character perspective. More so with Rogue Nation and Fallout carrying on as a sequel.

I prefer the newer ones, but the last few pages you can find plenty of differing opinions.

I love all of them except 2. The original is "dated" I guess, but I don't think feeling like a 90's movie is some kind of sin. If you want to skip to the more modern feeling ones though I'd suggest you start with M:I 3. Ignore the strange complaints about it, it's a great blockbuster movie and it has storyline aspects that are referenced in the ones after it. I actually think 3 is better than Ghost Protocol, personally.

I'll fully agree with you here, SV. I love the first one as more from a nostalgia respect. It is dated, however it's still a good spy flick regardless. Also, I think you're dead-on with M:I 3. There's always going to be differing opinions, but I think it's a more well-rounded flick versus Ghost Protocol. I loved Ghost Protocol the numerous times I've seen it, but the last time I saw it (on UHD) it didn't quite hold up as strongly as a dominating film in a franchise. I liked that it was more of a continuation of the story from 3, versus the jump from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3. Though it wasn't really a sequel in the sense that Rogue Nation to Fallout are. The introduction of Jeremy Renner's character was great, as well as a more commanding role for Simon Pegg's character, too.

Owen Davian in #3 made for a better villain overall versus Hendricks in GP. The movie also just felt like it had more gravity and weight overall versus GP. As cool and amazing (and gorgeous) as the Burj Kalifa scene is, in GP, it doesn't "really" feel as death-escaping as, say
[Show spoiler]the deadly microchip implanted in Ethan's head
scene in #3. Not to mention the opening scene of #3... what a crazy amount of tension and what a way to start a film. I liked the sense that decisions and actions regularly had direct consequences in #3, as well. I think #3 just had much more tension and build up overall.

First things first: this was shot and finished on 35mm anamorphic, so naturally the film opticals (titles, subtitles, dissolves, etc) take an obvious hit in terms of sharpness, though it's worth mentioning that the opening 'KIEV' title has been recreated digitally, the rest appear to be the originals. A good example of the softness is when Ethan is doing his email messages to Max and we get a series of dissolves to indicate time passing, when the camera lingers on Ethan falling asleep at the table it's the tail end of the optical so it's very soft, but when it cuts back to him after seeing his vision of Jim he's razor sharp. The colour also takes on a sallow tinge during most of these shots. This happens on and off throughout the film, it is what it is.

But when we get the first generation material, oh mai. The detail, the texture, the fine grain, I never dreamed it would ever look this good. The ladies are also shot with various amounts of filtration which imparts a gauzy look in some shots, rather an outmoded concept now but I love it when I see stuff like that in movies, it's old-school Hollywood glamour. No signs of any overcooked noise reduction or "grain management" that I can see anywhere, and thank **** for that.

Colour is nice and healthy, perhaps a bit too healthy as skin tones can veer towards the ruddy at times, but I'd rather ruddy than orangey or yellowy. That said, when poor old William Donloe is retching in the bathroom he looks pale as anything, I'd say that was intentional! Red in particular is good and vivid, even something like Kristen Scott Thomas' lipstick caught my eye. HDR enhances the range without wrenching it into eye-melting territory, it still 'looks' like Mission Impossible, and the black levels are excellent, neither distractingly crushed nor ridiculously thin and grey.

Yes, there's a bit of that customary chroma noise sprinkled here and there but it's kept under control for the most part, and I only noticed artefacts in the lights (as mentioned by another poster) in one shot, the rest were fine. I spotted a vertical scratch in one shot (Ethan pinning Claire to the bed) but apart from that this image is pristine in terms of dirt and damage.

I even turned on my AVR for this and cranked it, I thought the sound was excellent. Some people wondered why this was done in TrueHD 5.1 when they had DTS-HD MA 5.1 encodes ready to go but when comparing the two I thought that the newer encode had the edge, it sounds crisper and more dynamic, right from the opening drumrolls it just seemed to be more 'airier' and open. So although this hasn't been redone in immersive (you'll get over it) I think they've re-recorded the 5.1 audio as part of this remaster in general.

And I just wanna say how much I enjoyed the film, I've always loved it but seeing it in this quality - arguably better than when I saw it twice in 1996, not that I can remember what it looked like - was an absolute joy. So many spine-tingling moments, such a twisty-turny spy yarn, all wrapped up in De Palma's masterful usage of Dutch angles, split diopters and badass anamorphic framing in general. For all the column inches that this franchise generates about its stunts, there's nothing else in this series that's as tense as the restaurant debrief scene between Hunt and Kittridge.

Note the lack of lens flares too (apart from some CG-generated ones on the chopper in the Chunnel), it looks so 'clean' and I do wish filmmakers would start to reign them in, it's not big and it's not clever! Even the music is a delight, Danny Elfman delivering a deliciously quirky score (though not Tim Burton quirky) and man, when the big triumphant cue kicks in as Ethan takes care of business with Phelps at the end, I literally got chills from head to toe. Even getting a little tingle as I type this.

I can't emphasise enough how much I love this film, and the UHD presentation ain't far behind. Superb. The only bad thing I can say is that I've now got to follow it up with MI-bleedin'-2. Oh, joy. Maybe I won't despise it this time, I'll settle for mildly disliking it.
Have you had the chance to compare MI1 DV vs HDR10?

This is what I did...and waited all these years to buy them on UHD. Can't wait for Fallout.

Don’t know if this has been asked before but, does anyone else have orange subtitles on Ghost Protocol? No idea if this is how they are on this movie or something going on with my player but the previous movies had regular white subtitles....

That's my plan in hoping to get $10 pricing on Black Friday for these and several other movies. I managed to snag a disc for MI: 3 for $8 a couple weeks ago.

$10 for all 5 movies in 4k?
Is that not impossible even on black friday?
Or do you mean $10 each?
