![]() 2.5 out of 5 I rolled my eyes when I realized it was a lost footage film, but then eventually got into it - to the point where I was like, this actually is pretty decent, but then the ending was completely retarded. So meh. |

My goal this October has been to watch every Hammer Horror Dracula, Frankenstein and the first Mummy film. I've never seen any of them and have always wanted to get around to them.
So far I've watched the following: 1957 - The Curse of Frankenstein Outstanding. Peter Cushing is amazing. The story, acting and presentation are all top notch. A fun movie and a new classic for me. 1958 - The Horror of Dracula Also very good but I didn't like it as much as Curse of Frankenstein. Christopher Lee instantly makes Dracula his own and you don't even think about Lugosi. Peter Cushing of course is just as good as always. 1958 - The Revenge of Frankenstein This one surprised me. It wasn't as good as Curse but I found it very enjoyable and interesting. Victor trying to make the perfect human was a natural progression and I thought the monster not wanting to be a monster was pretty brilliant. 1959 - The Mummy This one kind of bored me honestly. It was well done but it just didn't draw me in like the others I've watched so far. Definitely a cool looking Mummy though. I probably need to watch this one again. 1960 - The Brides of Dracula I didn't know Christopher Lee wasn't going to be in this so I kept waiting for him to show up. Even without Lee, I thought this was pretty fun. They upped the gore and I liked seeing Dracula's vampire cult. It created some good lore for the franchise. 1964 - The Evil of Frankenstein Not good. Peter Cushing tries but he can't save this. Absolutely terrible looking monster and a really odd story. It's a semi-reboot and retelling of the Universal Frankenstein and while not unwatchable, it's easily the worst of the Hammers I've watched so far. Up next, Dracula: Prince of Darkness. |

a nightmare on elm street - 5/5
this is a classic because everything in this movie works. there's so much good stuff just in the first twenty minutes. tina's death is one of the best moments in 80s horror. there is so much great imagery in this too. this movie moves really quickly. which is great. there's never a part where it drags, so you're always invested. it's too bad that everything this movie does right, the sequels all do wrong. I wish I could have seen this cold in a theatre for the first time. can you imagine seeing this without knowing anything about for the first time? Abecause he wa such a sensation with all the sub par sequels, I knew a lot about it before every seeing a movie. I even had a freddy glove before seeing any of the movies. this might be one of the worst cases where the sequels actually tarnish the reputation of the original. there are so many great horror movies in the 80s, but if you were making a last, there is no way this wouldn't be in the top five. and even if you said it was the five, that still feels like you're ranking it too low. |

I think the kindest thing that most people say about this movie is that they respect Gus Van Sant for experimenting at remaking a classic, which is faint praise indeed. Having seen the original many times over the years I have to say, the remake is not that bad. It's certainly no worse than any of the other crap remakes, reboots or sequels Hollywood has pumped out over the years. It's certainly far more enjoyable than something like the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Maybe it was because Van Sant had the gall to stick to a classic film so closely while still deviating at certain points that rubbed people the wrong way. Clearly there are some bad decisions (like the inserts of the cow) and some wrong-headed casting choices (Rita Wilson) but it is kind of interesting to see how this story and that dialogue play out in a modern setting, with some actors like Macy sticking to the old school portrayal, while others like Moore try to take a more modern approach (which is kind of hilariously dated now too as she walks around with a pair of Walkman headphones around her neck). It ends up coming across as a very surreal viewing experience at times and can be fun if you don't take things too seriously, whether you're talking about this film or the original. Aside from the film itself, I have to say the PQ on this blu-ray release leaves a lot to be desired. I know the blu-ray only came out last year but the transfer Universal provided to Shout must have been an old one when they were still in full-on scrubbing and sharpening mode, kind of like the Back to the Future blu-rays. |

![]() ![]() 29. JASON GOES TO HELL ![]() ![]() There's just not enough Jason in this for me. The beginning and end we get with him are a cool 20 minutes but the different idea they tried with this movie just didn't work for me. I hadn't seen this in a few years and while I won't watch it again any time soon, it was cool to revisit this worst movie in the series. Cool ending teaser for the future Freddy Vs. Jason. ![]() ![]() 32. The Dark Half ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thad Beaumont, an author who writes literary fiction that doesn't sell very well, lives in Maine with his wife and two kids, and he teaches at a university. George Stark is an author who writes best selling crime fiction about a character named Alexis Machine. Thad is a recovering alcoholic; George drinks heavily and smokes cigarettes. Thad writes his novels with a typewriter; George writes his novels in longhand with a particular brand of pencil. Thad and George are two people with completely different personalities, with George being considered, "not a very nice guy." But Thad and George do have one thing in common. They are the same person. When Thad's first few novels weren't a huge success, he changed his genre and wrote something that was more trashy and entertaining under the pseudonym George Stark. Those novels sold millions of copies, so he continued to write under both names. When someone discovers that the two men are, in fact, the same person and threatens to expose Thad to the media, he decides to get ahead of it and go public first. He stages a mock funeral for George, killing George off once and for all. But George has always existed separate from Thad, and even Thad's wife, Elizabeth, has recognized that he seems to be a different person when he writes the George Stark novels. And once Thad buries George for good, George comes to life and starts killing people close to Thad. With the sheriff looking into the case, and all evidence pointing toward Thad, Thad has to prove that George is alive before George takes over his life. The Dark Half came out shortly after Stephen King revealed that he wrote novels under the pseudonym of Richard Bachman. At first, Stephen King wrote the novels under the Bachman name because his publisher thought that an author shouldn't release too many books in the same year, but he also wanted to see if he could find success again based on his talent rather than the King brand. The Dark Half, directed by George A. Romero, is one of the better King adaptations. Timothy Hutton does an excellent job playing both Thad and George, creating two completely different characters. Michael Rooker also plays the sheriff, Alan Pangborn -- a character who has appeared in other Stephen King novels, including Needful Things -- and it was good to see him in a non-villainous role for a change. This is one movie that I had read the novel for a long time ago, but I hadn't gotten around to watching the movie until now. 1. House on Haunted Hill ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 2.
