In a way H40 feels like a best of movie, which I like, since I enjoy all the films at least to some extent.

Aaaaand there's my late-night cue of me realizing that I was an idiot and mis-remembering the credits. Fixed that now.

Also what did H40 do that hasn't been done in the other Halloween entries? There are tons of throwback scenes and references in that movie.
Well here's the thing. I understand that it kind of had to follow the first movie a bit, but that its blessing and curse. When you put the first and second movie together, they work, don't get me wrong, but not as a sequel but more of an extended cut.

A good sequel in my book is a movie that mixes in something new and something old. Yes, I did notice that the new movie was littered with throwback scenes, but apart from the handful of ones I found lazy, the ones that involved the role reversal shots with Michael & Laurie I thought were good since it was a theme the movie had, something that made the movie a little unique when compared to H2.

It also managed to properly have Michael as an inexplicable force of evil like Carpenter originally intended unlike some of the crappy sequels which tried to explain why he kills (Looking at you H6).

So putting it shortly, I don't think H2 is a horrible movie, but it's a straight-sequel that is pretty much exactly what you'd expect, it simply didn't bring much to the table apart from the Carpenter - Howarth score which worked at some moments but tripped over itself at others.

For me H40 didn't cover anything new. PTSD? Family troubles? Facing your fear? Becoming badass? Hunting the hunter? H20 took care of that 20 years ago. Like someone else said, it was a greatest hits album culminating elements and scenes from past Halloweens. Hell the climax basically repeated HII... except there's no resolve which sucks. The last 20 minutes of Halloween 2018 is when i thought it finally leveled up, but that wasn't enough to make this the best since the first and certainly not good enough for me to bury Halloween II which indeed was half of Halloween night circa 1978, or H20 which did this song and dance already. Despite all this, I did enjoy Halloween 2018 as a return to form, but holy hell is it getting overblown praise. Perhaps I found the high fallutin attitude towards the franchise from Blumhouse and the decision to excise the whole entire canon to be irksome... more so after seeing the finished product only to find it merely ok. False confidence.

I've seen the new one 3 times already and give it a soft 3.5, though I rounded DOWN to 3 in the poll. My biggest complaint is that it looks like an episode of The Gilmore Girls, color-wise...VERY Stars Hollow. Quite 2001 looking.
Here is my new ranking.

1. Laurie's Resurrection Wig
2. Laurie's Halloween 2018 Wig
3. Laurie's Halloween II 1981 Wig

I really like Terminator Salvation, the effects and design work is most definitely excellent and that single take sequence is fantastic. I certainly prefer it to T3!

Getting way off topic now though.

Me too - it felt so "B-grade slasher flick stupid". Useless characters, impossible situations that were completely unrealistic - even for a horror flick, and on and on.

Cant wait to see this 2018 version of Halloween. The reviews are certainly mixed. Some of what Im reading doesnt sound so good but I'll make up my own mind.

Your comment about the cinematography is true, it does look like a 90's-early 2000's film, but I think that was the intention. And it mimicks the original films look. Which is very generic/natural looking. It doesn't have to look like Rob Zombie's grunge and grime music video dirtiness to make it scary. The naturalistic non-cinematic look is scarier because it looks like an ordinary town. Making it more believable that something like this can actually happen.

A couple brought their kids with them to this movie. Couldn't have been older 6 years old. I couldn't believe it.

There were like 3 or 4 kids at my screening too, around 8-10 years old. Two of them were with what appeared to be their grandmother, as she was pretty old and walked with a cane. No doubt, the bratty-ass kids forced her to go.

My theater was full of teenagers too. They were with their parents so I assume it was a generational thing as I'm sure their parents saw the original film in theaters when they were their kids age.

But I also had a noisy crowd that liked to talk and yell at the screen as if the characters could hear them. Though I guess that's part of the horror movie experience. However once Michael appeared in Haddonfield and began wrecking shit up everyone in the audience got quiet. Which made the tension even more terrifying.
