IMO, if you plan on showing the whole saga, go in order I-VI. If you decide to just give him just a small taste of SW, go with EPIV.

How about just the original trilogy and never ever tell him about the prequels. He would probably enjoy them more in the long run. I took my nephew to see Episode 1 when it first came out at the theater and it completely turned him off Star Wars forever.

You could start with IV-VI and then make him wait about 15 years to see Episode I....just to build up some anticipation and watch that "Jar-Jar/Jake Lloyd" look come across his face.

Same here. They don't even look like they take place in the same universe.

I say go with the originals. They won't get confused.. that's silly talk. Star Wars holds it own better without the prequels.

Would you watch Lord Of The Rings this way?

1 - Return Of The King
2 - The Two Towers
3 - The Fellowship Of The Ring
The story was told IV, V, VI, I, II, III...that is how it should be watched.

Imagine seeing Pulp Fiction for the first time in chronological order, it just wouldn't be the same.

Lord of the Rings was presented as one story broken into three films. Star Wars was intentionally set to begin amidst the Rebel vs. Empire conflict, giving us just enough backstory to know who these characters are. The prequels simply exist to show us just exactly what transpired.. and it's not what most of us imagined. Anakin Skywalker was a "good friend and a cunning warrior" to Ben Kenobi.. in the OT. Yet Anakin Skywalker prances around like a 10 year-old girl in Jedi robes throughout the prequels. He is not "cunning" he is reckless and operates off of his lust for Padme and emotion towards his dead mother. Also, Qui-Gon Jinn did not train Obi-Wan. Yoda did.

Definitley OT then PT

If you watch the PT first, it takes away the epicness of Empire

Avoid the Phantom Menace. I was 16 when it came out and was bored to tears. I can only imagine what might happen to a 5 year old. Start with the original trilogy, then move on to episodes II & III. Save episode I for when he is 25 and can sit through it.

The real trick to maintain the best surprise ending in film history, with Vader's revelation in Empire Strikes Back. With that in mind, the best order is as follows:

Episode 4 -- The introduction to the SW universe...perfect bad guys, charismatic good guys, and a fantastic climax. We also hear that Darth Vader killed Luke's father.

Episode 5 -- Everything goes to hell, the rebellion is on the run, Luke abandons his training to face Vader, and learns a terrbile secret. "Ben...why didn't you tell me?"

Like The Godfather Part II we now FLASH BACK...

Episodes I, II, and III -- if you've never seen the films and you watch them in my suggested order, many of the questions of Empire Strikes Back are answered in Episode III -- plus you get the shocking revelation that Luke and Leia are brother and sister (which works a whole lot better here than it does in Jedi).

Episode 6 -- We now return to the main narrative, except now, we're terrified for Luke because he's walking the same path as his old man. We just saw how Vader lost his soul trying to save someone he loves, now we see him regain his soul by doing the same thing. The entire series is resolved, all the classic surprises are maintained and in some cases, enhanced.

So, to repeat, the best order is 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 6

In fact, and SW fanboys hate me for this, you don't really need 1 and 2, and you can go 4, 5, 3, 6 if you want. Lucas himself said that he only told 20% of his intended backstory in the first two chapters, and then had to cram in the remaining 80% in Revenge of the Sith and couldn't get it all in (such as Anakin created by the Sith...he could only hint at it in the movie). You lose a few things going 4, 5, 3, 6, such as QuiGon learning the "disappearing into the Force" bit and passing it on to ObiWan, but that's a fairly minor thing.

So, 4 5 1 2 3 6. Or just 4 5 3 6.

I would never tell someone how to raise thier child, but episode III might be a bit graphic for a 5 year old. Otherwise I would watch them I II III IV V VI.

1-6.

That's the way the story was intended to run from Lucas, but he was only given the budget for the 4th one first.

I honestly think that is spoon-fed bull crap.
Of course Lucas would say that.
Ugggh.
