Did anyone else feel a little disappointed by the Carpenter score? I mean don't get me wrong, I like it as a whole and in context to the movie's visuals and all, but it just never managed to peak in quality. I think it's mainly due to the instruments used rather than Carpenter's skill as a composer since a lot of the sounds in it are very modern and not in a good way. I don't really care much for the clicking percussion used in this movie and the synth sounds too mellow and never quite as eerie as the original with the Moog pads and stingers.

I loved it, but it's a more expansive score and it's actually not a solo Carpenter score. He's playing keyboards, his son is playing keyboards and synths, and his godson is playing guitar. It's basically most of his live band playing it, which is great. Especially if you've seen JC and his band live. They're awesome.

The score was the best part of the film, along with The Shape himself.

Massively inferior to many of the sequels it retcons (most crucially II and H20). I have to laugh at the H20 detractors moaning about a 90s movie feeling like a 90s movie. Well, this doesn't exactly feel like a 70s movie either... just typical 21st century bloated nostalgia porn and cinematic fan-fiction.

Whatever.
Ok I get the over rated overhyped criticism and that not everyone will like it
But to say Curtis phoned her performance in? Cmon man she did absolutely fantastic in this film she was so good probably why I hated when it cut back to the teenagers cause I just wanted to see more of Laurie

There was plenty of opportunity as well. I was surprised also.

I was also half expecting Ben Tramer to get a mention (unless he did and I somehow missed it?)

For a split second I thought

[Show spoiler]that when they suddenly happened to find Michael and run him over with the police cruiser so easily, that it'd end up being Ben Tramer again!

Split I have zero interest in the subject matter so I'll likely never see it. Upgrade I don't think is a horror movie? I do want to see that one, but haven't yet. Don't want to pay $20 for a standard BD in the UHD age. I'll get it eventually.

I more meant Blumhouse's usual horror fare. Or even if you want to take them out of it, modern horror in general. It just lacked something for me, I dunno. Glad others are enjoying it, but the wife and I were both very disappointed.

Only seen the new movie once so far, but here's my overhauled ranking of the series (mostly going by my gut feeling and how much I enjoyed each movie!):

1. Halloween (1978) - 10/10
2. Halloween II (2009) - 9.5/10
3. Halloween (2018) - 9/10
4. Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998) - 9/10
5. Halloween (2007) - 8/10
6. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) - 8/10
7. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995) - 7/10
8. Halloween II (1981) - 6/10
9. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988) - 6/10
10. Halloween: Resurrection (2002) - 3/10
11. Halloween 5 (1989) - 2/10

Whatever.
That was my issue with H40 concerning the retcon of the mythology. Taking away the events of H2 and H20 and even the idea that Michael Myers has had a lengthy history of killing, takes away the impact of his legacy in the process.

Halloween 1 of course was terrifying, and some shit went down... but based on the new retconned storyline, would it really have resulted in 40 years later the way H40 played out? Would it have had that kind of impact based on the 1978 film alone?

I get the PTSD, but after 40 years would Laurie have been that neck deep in serious paranoia and fear and waiting for Michael to come back based on Halloween 1's chain of events? Would doctors have been that mystified and would Michael be that legendary? Imo, not really. Bundy and Dahmer were worse. Hell a good portion of known serial killers have had bigger better reasons for their infamy. Now if H2 and H20 were factored in along with the implication of Michael's murderous escapades, then yeah his legend would ring true and the fascination and terror would be warranted. The brother/sister angle would have been beneficial to the generational angle in H40 as well.

The retconned storyline only softened the blow and took away Michael's legendary status making H40 look kinda overstated and exaggerated. I just don't buy it without the canon intact. I think Laurie's situation was more believable in H20.

Well, that was okay I guess, but I don't really understand the love.

My fear with this was that it would come across as a redundant, inferior variant on H20. And I think I was right. Felt rather pointless, didn’t feel like it needed to exist, not enough to distinguish it unless you count some really shitty writing like that godawful bit with the doctor that’s introduced and then quickly got rid of. And - it just seemed a bit ‘off ‘- I’m not quite sure why but to me it just wasn’t scary enough. Far from being like the original, it looked and felt more like one of the Rob Zombie films at times, esp.the way some of the kills were handled. Michael wasn't really Michael to me....should have stayed in the shadows a bit more. Some fine moments, and good acting, score etc -and I’ll probably buy it for completist sake - but if I want to do the Halloween franchise in two or three films I'll stick with Halloween followed by the 1981 Halloween 2 followed sometimes by H20.

5.5/10

I’m guessing that was the intention. The way it was shot seemed so similar to H2. I didn’t see H2 till after this one but I still thought it was going to be someone else.

The part of Halloween 2 I wish wasn't retconned was Laurie witnessing Michael walk through the glass door, get shot again multiple times and then get up again. Seeing something that would mess me up for a loooong time.

H2 only has one small scene in the car that mentions the brother/sister connection. In the new movie they could've said they got that information wrong somehow.

As far as Michael burning in the end of H2, they may have been able to explain that they put him out beforehand he died. But that might be a stretch. He looked pretty crispy while burning.

My personal taste would've liked a tinge more "he can't die" but I did like what they with Michael in this new one. He felt like a dark, killing machine just walking around.

H40 coulda kept H2 intact atleast. Michael coulda survived, have severe burns, maybe one eye missing. 40 years is a long time for someone especially a force of evil like Michael to heal enough to kick ass again. The brother/sister element doesn't in any way hurt the story at all, and gives it more weight than anything else. Dr. Loomis would have died in the explosion for sure, so i woulda made that so.

There were better alternatives, and they kinda blew it in a way.
