Maybe you should have started with Disney's implementation of BD Live. It is several magnitudes better than the crappy Sony one you were dealing with. But I've had zero issues with any of the various BD Live implementations. Either you picked an unfortunate time when Sony was having server issues or your problem springs from user error.
