I watch physical media about 90% more than I stream on any service. I’ve experienced too many quality issues to ever bother with it anymore than that. However, it’s still a “nice to have” when it is working, and I’m truly sorry to anyone who purged their entire Criterion and/or Warner Archive Collections in favor of a lifetime of Filmstruck.

does anybody use this streaming service? it is free w/ a library card, although not every library card holder has access to it. I have a Chicago Public Library card and I cannot use the site. a lot of university libraries allow access, though.

Wow! I never even thought of that. But you're right. I'm sure that while most of us used FilmStruck to compliment our physical libraries, there are probably some who sold their collections thinking that physical discs were no longer needed.

Preliminary start date Nov 2- Dec 3 as leaked by a BN Employee on reddit. I'd say it's a pretty strong rumor given the last couple sales though note that the start date of July sale changed 3 times in the last 10 days

Not offering day 1 support for popular devices like PS4 surely did not help.

I read recently that Warner is launching its own streaming service next year, and is already removing content from existing platforms (the article indicated Netflix is losing the Friends television show as a result of Warner's decision). Assume this is a factor in FilmStruck being closed down?

I'd like to see Criterion partner with Amazon for a new channel. Amazon is pushing to get as much content as possible in 4k. Naturally, 1080p would be available, too. This would be a good partnership and the cost would be reasonable.
Of course they can include it for free with Prime, too, but that may not be reasonable. |

just way too many streaming services out there... cutting the cord and only streaming is getting to be almost expensive as a cable package.
(this coming from someone that does not have cable or subscribe to any streaming service) |

Warner Archive Instant and Filmstruck was a great combo for film lovers, and people like me who stream as a window into a larger world. AT&T (now known as WarnerMedia. Ugh) just did away with that because its "niche" in their eyes and doesn't make the $$$ like Netflix does. The fact that the word "portfolios" was even mentioned here tells you everything you need to know about the heads of this new entity.

How about some good news guys? The Film Forum will hae a one-week screening for Ozu's The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice (1952), sourced from a new 4K Restoration, and being distributed by Janus Films.

I never signed up for FilmStruck and never had any desire. I always believe that physical releases of films have a longer stored value than something digital or what you'd find on a streaming website. Though I fear that the future will be streaming, I will continue to invest in films on blu-ray and until they take away my blu-ray player from my cold, dead hands, I for one will be watching my movies that way.
