While I’m of course excited to have this in the best visual presentation possible, I’m not expecting a night and day difference between this and the already great blu-ray. Honestly, I’m far more excited about the 70mm 6-track mix finally being on the disc. One of the things I hate about watching Superman is that I despise the old 5.1 remix, so I’m forced to watch the film in PLII which, honestly, shows the stereo track’s age and doesn’t befit a movie of this epicness. I’m so thrilled at the prospect of finally having a faithful discrete surround mix I can listen to with this film.

Will be interested in hearing your thoughts on the audio mix.

I think as long as WB handles the transfer correctly it should look as good as possible, better compression but as long as fans realize this movie is soft in so many shots and uses diffused lighting etc.

Really curious for what people think.

Any chance your copy is on its way?

"My other concern me when I heard about the release was the possibility of the film being shorn of its grain - and a grainy little devil, it is. But the grain has been retained, yielding a lovely velvety appearance."

Thank you, that is all.

RAH's review is interesting. Of course, not long ago at HTF he and others ridiculously thought this movie did not require a UHD BD release nor could benefit. Now a change of heart after seeing the potential of the format. It almost sounds like a rationalization and justification from him that this movie wouldn't have needed a UHD BD if the BD was remastered. Nonsense.

EVERY 35MM FILM WILL BENEFIT FROM UHD and HDR IF DONE PROPERLY.

CAN WE STOP WITH THIS, "OH, THE WAY THE MOVIE WAS SHOT WON'T BENEFIT," CRAP ONCE AND FOR ALL?

Okay, done with the caps.

I checked it out this afternoon and that 70mm 6 track -- while housed in a standard 5.1 Dolby Digital container -- is just terrific. It's better balanced than the old '78 2-channel mix, dialogue is clearer, and it really sounds great. There's discrete surround activity when Krypton is destroyed, and it just has a really "refined" sound that the old 2-channel never had, even when you matrixed it into surround.

The Atmos track is the remix, and frankly I think it's even worse here because the LFE seems amplified. I'm not a fan of it to begin with so I didn't spend much time with it, but the Dolby Digital 5.1 is the default track on the UHD and I think most hardcore fans are going to be very happy with it. Great job by Warner remastering it for this set!

Disc looks great too, high bit-rate, great colors (the guys falling off the ledge on Krypton are a vivid red) -- only watched the first 25 minutes but I was excited by what I saw.

Heh, I thought his comments were extremely ill-judged at the time and whaddaya know? I always knew the potential was there and I wonder if all the sycophants who started parroting RAH's sentiments are now going to swivel on a dime and run out to buy it. Couple the new 4K transfer with a new 5.1 mix based off of original audio (plus Atmos for those who hanker after such things) and this looks like a cast-iron winner.

RAH's point makes no sense. The 1080p Blu-ray is not old at all. It's a beautiful 2K Scan (NOT a TELECINE) from the IP just like every other BD from Warner for movies from the late 70's onwards....

Of course a 4K Scan from the OCN will give you better picture quality. It's not that surprising ...

Would adding the original audio uncompressed or HD have hurt the disc space for this release?

Just a shame most studios treat original audio options as an afterthought

Most of the naysayers are butthurt about having to upgrade in order to get new transfers so any tiny complaints about transfers get blown out of proportion. I remember reading reviews of early BD’s that said they couldn’t tell a difference. They can’t argue that PQ isn’t a big upgrade so they created this nonsense about revisionist HDR.

It's a pity that Warners stopped doing lossless 5.1 backups just when they actually have some 5.1 mixes worth retaining (seeing as there's zero need for a 5.1 backup on a modern movie actually mixed in Atmos, the Atmos IS the original), but it's still better than them stopping doing 5.1 backups at all.

That is the remastered audio (for home video) for the opening credits (louder swoosh sounds and more aggressive swoosh and thump for the red S). I am hopeful that Warner used the remastered audio for the 4K release.

Are you saying the ATMOS track is the audio remix that was first done for the special edition release on home video? The one with the louder swooshes during the opening credits and the big boom LFE as the red S hits the screen in the credits?

Yes. The Atmos track is the remix with the "new" effects and the LFE if anything is even more prominent here. The remastered 6 track is in lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 though it still sounds quite good.
