I wish the site reviewer would include at least one screenshot with the subtitles included.

I like to know if they are white or yellow and also the text size in relation to the screen image as well as typeface quality.

I watched 'Cinema Paradiso' for the first time today (theatrical cut, from the new Arrow Video release). FABULOUS film! I loved every minute of it! And the ending, oh my! I needed multiple tissues!

If you liked that, then I highly recommend watching the longer 'Directors-Cut' upon your next viewing. Much, much better, in my opinion! (It totally 'ups the ante' for the ending.) You'll never watch the Theatrical-Version again. One of my absolute favorites!

Ya just like the lord of the rings directors cut and kingdom of heavens directors cut its that good. I watched the theater one after and it did not have the same impact that i had when watching Cinema Paradiso its that much better .

Disagree completely. Have always loved the theatrical cut, and when the extended director's version first showed up on DVD, I absolutely hated it. A rare instance where that final third, of the man as an adult, just usurped all the magic out of the film. Too much info, plodding, boring, unnecessary. Weinstein was right by editing the film down into the award-winning masterpiece it became. And I rarely side with a producer or distributor, but they got it right this time.

Theatrical: 5 stars
DC: 1 star

Agreed. The directors cuts ruins the movie. The theatrical cut is the best one.

I love the DC. The last third of the film, most of which is cut from the TC, is so dramatic that it made me revisit this film again and again. Fantastic acting by both Jacques Perrin & Brigitte Fossey!

Those of us with a history of painful lost loves can relate to the Director's Cut version of the film. Personally, I love the DC but agree that the Theatrical Cut is the true masterpiece. Happy to have both versions.

The problem with the directors cut (and it's a big one) is that it develops another sub-plot 2/3 of the way through the movie and distracts the viewer from the main focus of the movie... the relationship between the little boy (our protagonist) and the old man. In turn, it lessens the relationship (in the viewers eye/mind) between the little boy and old man. The theatrical cut walks our protagonist (the little boy) through his teenage years with its usual discoveries of new love and lost (boy meets girl, boy looses girl), without detracting from his relationship with the old man, which is the anchor of the film.

The new sub-pop involving the girl in his teenage years is interesting (on a certain level) but amount to nothing in the end. It's impact weakens the films message of love and bond between the little boy and old man.

Yup, the slipcover is the only difference from the regular release.

Just blind-bought this in the B&N Arrow sale (with the beautiful slipcover), and was wondering which cut I should watch...the two hour theatrical, or the three+ hour director's cut? Is the DC just self-indulgent, or is it a Kingdom Of Heaven situation where it enriches the film to the point where the theatrical cut is reduced to a curiosity?

It was the Theatrical Cut that won the USA awards.

If you see the so-called Directors' Cut (aka, the long version) first,
then it tends to rob the moments from the Theatrical.

If one prefers the longer version, then that is their choice and I don't fault them,
but
I would highly recommend the Theatrical Cut (which is shorter) for your first time viewing.

I was well into BD before I discovered this movie, so I just assumed going off the BDs that no English dub was ever done, but evidently that's not true. I managed to see a bit of the English dub for this movie recently and it's actually wonderful. Unlike some dubs the voice actors can actually act and the voice actor for young Toto actually sounds like a real little boy. Does anybody know the reason why the dub has never appeared on any HD release?

Because dubs are horrible and no foreign film should ever be watched with a dub track, probably.

Theatrical Cut is the best version IMO. The Director's Cut tries to be too edgy with the unnecessary nudity.
