Try bringing it to Kino, tell them the pkg was misdelivered or stolen. They might handle it for you and save you from dealing with UPS directly. Maybe the KL Support person is still here? |

Not as good as the original Broadway cast of Paint your Wagon, I still really like the movie, i've seen it on TCM lately and Wow what a restoration, the sound was unbelieveable. There are so many great Paramount movies unreleased on bluray. The roadshow longer version of Darling Lili, On a Clear Day you can see Forever, ect.

![]() ![]() When a former model is found murdered in Las Vegas, Jim Henry, a Korean War veteran played by Richard Conte (The Big Combo, The Godfather), is arrested by the local police, but he quickly turns the tables on his captors by holding them at gunpoint and then escaping. While fleeing on a desert highway, he spots two stranded women on the roadside and helps them to fix their stalled vehicle. The women, played by Joan Bennett (Scarlet Street, The Woman in the Window) and Wanda Hendrix (Ride the Pink Horse), offer Jim a ride to California, unaware that danger lies in their path. The 1954 film noir, Highway Dragnet, which was directed by Nathan Juran (The 7th Voyage of Sinbad) and co-written by B-movie legend Roger Corman, hits the ground running with its familiar genre convention of a down-on-his-luck ex-soldier drifting from town to town, and picks up momentum in a riveting way, mostly thanks to effective on-location camerawork, as the authorities set up road blocks in a frantic attempt to defuse the hostage situation. Conte, who can erupt into menacing intensity at the drop of a hat, is the highlight here, but the multilayered interactions between Bennett and Hendrix are also worth the price of admission. Highway Dragnet throws a nifty curveball in our direction after its first half hour, and keeps us glued to the screen through most of its short run time by way of its criminal-on-the-run narrative developments. The conclusion, which leans heavily on convenient coincidence and poor character decisions, is somewhat underwhelming compared to what came before, and, to put it mildly, one particular actress is not entirely convincing with regard to quicksand skills. For the most part, however, this is a fun and kinetic daytime noir. Be on the lookout for Mary Beth Hughes (Inner Sanctum) as a three-sheets-to-the-wind blonde during the first scene. This bare bones Kino Lorber Blu-ray shines with a nicely filmic presentation. |

![]() ![]() Miss Blandish, an heiress played by Linden Travers (The Lady Vanishes), is engaged to be married, but has no apparent enthusiasm for her dull fiancé or for her sheltered life in the home of her multimillionaire father. Her world quickly changes on her wedding night, when she is kidnapped and her husband-to-be is killed by small-time crooks who are after her diamond jewelry. A series of betrayals and murders ensue, ultimately resulting in the heiress being held captive by a fiercely diabolical gangster, played by Jack La Rue (A Farewell to Arms), with whom she falls in love. The two of them dream of running off together, but criminal rivals and the local police have other plans. The 1948 noir-edged British crime thriller, No Orchids for Miss Blandish, was greeted with caustic animosity upon its release by critics who considered it to be the worst movie ever made because of its unrelenting sex and violence. The Monthly Film Bulletin described it as, “The most sickening exhibition of brutality, perversion, sex and sadism ever to be shown on a cinema screen.” Even today, this film, while viscerally tame by contemporary standards, pushes the envelope of good taste and provides quite a jolt due to its many sequences of abrupt ferocity, in the form of characters being struck in the face, characters being beaten to death, women being roughed up, and, most of all, people being riddled with bullets. All of the male characters have a capacity for bloodshed, while all of the females are shown expressing affection for the men who abuse them. If you can imagine a black-and-white version of Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas condensed down to 104 minutes with all of the savagery left intact, then you would not be too far off the mark. This old-school fireball of a film was directed by St. John Legh Clowes and based on the popular James Hadley Chase novel, which was, in turn, influenced by William Faulkner's book, Sanctuary, a work that was quite controversial in its own right. It's an oddly offbeat motion picture, with a mix of British and American actors, and with badly casted people who seem to have zero chemistry with one another. Jack La Rue is the exception, and, although he comes across as a second-rate Humphrey Bogart, his opening sequence is masterfully menacing. Zoe Gail, who plays a nightclub stripper, is also decently memorable. Finally, Richard Neilson, who plays a loose cannon early in the story, gives Joe Pesci's overage punk character in Goodfellas a run for his money. No Orchids for Miss Blandish is a movie of disparately cluttered ingredients that should not work, but somehow manage to come together in a fascinating way. I'm not sure what this says about my moral character, but I like this film simply on account of its formidable wall of constant maliciousness and impropriety. Despite its year of production, there is nothing quaint about it. This Kino Lorber Blu-ray sports a filmic and detailed high definition video presentation, with competent audio to boot (although I would love to have been able to use a subtitle option during a few scenes). It's too bad that this particular Blu-ray is bare bones, because this movie is just begging for some supplementary material. |

I watched the BD of "Great Scout and Cathouse Thursday". All I can say is this film is completely insane. Lee Marvin plays legend of the frontier Sam Longwood, who does quick scams with his partners, the grizzled Billy (Strother Martin) and Native American Joe (Oliver Reed). Marvin is out for revenge against his ex-business partner Colby (Robert Culp) who stole gold from him and took his wife (Elizabeth Ashley). They finally track down Culp and, in order to extract the ransom, decide to kidnap Ashley. Reed also decides to kidnap a young prostitute (Kay Lenz) along the way.
I can't even begin to describe how ludicrous and entertaining this film is. The first place you have to start is Oliver Reed. Reed wears redface, a shoulder length jet black wig, and talks in an accent oscillates between his normal voice and a stereotype of what a Native American sounds like if you've never actually met one. He's just out of his mind in this movie; I honestly couldn't believe what I was watching anytime ol' Ollie was onscreen. It really is the type of character and performance that could only exist in the 70s. But that's just the beginning. In one scene, Reed goes to get a painful remedy for gonorrhea (because of course he has gonorrhea) and, after he gets it, he quite literally punches Marvin through a window. However, poor Kay Lenz is subjected to perhaps the most embarrassment. In one scene, she wakes up after a night of love-making next to a shirtless Marvin, who looks old enough to be her grandfather. In another scene, after Reed threatens to rape her and Marvin ixnays it, she asks, "Why? Aren't I good enough?" Scene after scene unfolds with such absurdity that it stretches credulity. All I can say is that if you enjoy time capsules that are wildly offensive by modern standards, then check this out. It's also worth noting that Marvin and Reed were reportedly in a state of constant drunkenness during off hours, which I'm sure raised the level of insanity a few notches. I really recommend picking this one up, it's a true slice of insanity. |

Anyway, last night I watched my recently acquired blu-ray of Oscar. I've always enjoyed this film and I don't think it's gotten the respect it deserves. It's a wonderfully crafted old school farce filled with fantastic actors and great dialogue. Sylvester Stallone is, well, a little out of place but he tries oh so very hard so I respect him for that, but the highlight for me is Marisa Tomei. I saw this on the big screen and remember developing quite the crush on her and revisiting it, I can see why. She's hilarious and adorable (even when her character is being annoying). The disc also contains an interview with John Landis with some great behind-the-scenes stories, which were interesting to me because there really isn't much out there written about this film, so my only criticism is that I wish the interview was longer! |

Rider on the Rain is one of the remaining major Bronson movies that's needed an official Region-A release, and is something of a holy grail among his fans. Really excited about this.
