Heck no. Aside from small differences as to how they all handle their 4K upscaling and chroma uprezzing their 4K HDR output is essentially identical to my eyes. I prefer the gentler upscaling of the OPPO and Sony vs the Panny though, the latter has its fans precisely because it jacks up the chroma rez and overbakes the luma but it's a fraction harsher than I like.

Seeing as an Oppo was out of the question for me, I'm still holding off until a good DV-capable player that can automatically detect the format, without needing a firmware update, hits the market.

And yes this is off-topic.

I still don't get why other players can't do it automatically.

You nailed it. That is precisely why I prefer Panny over Oppo and Sony. And also why I prefer One X over the Panny. And why Blade Runner is my reference disc. And of course everything I’ve previously said in regards to processing power.

There are measurable differences between color output between players usually. Of course measureable isn't always discernible. In the past, Sony's direct mode did in fact introduce DE errors above three for some portions of the color spectrum. If never pointed out you would likely never see them and I've never measured one of their 4k players.

I've done a calibration run using all three of my players and the colour/greyscale differences are so small as to be imperceptible.

I believe you. Just pointing it out since I saw many laymen saying the same things previously based on similar faulty logic/assumptions.

Out of curiosity it'd be interesting to see a table of how those comparisons start to change between a 100-500 point run between SDR, HDR-10, and DV between the 3...but that'd be chore and a half for what's likely not an awesome answer lol

Geoff and Sky Captain use the Sony X800 and I trust their opinions about a billion times more than I trust yours.
I ditched it for the X700 and it's DV compatibility, but if it hadn't been for that, I'd still be sitting tight with the X800.

A solid player, that also doubles as a weapon against any potential home intruders.

Damn straight. Built like a tank.

My favourite thing about the X800 is how damn quiet it is. I'm sensitive to player noise so having a unit which is so quiet it can quite literally be drowned out by the sound of a mouse farting, has been a joy.

I love that he says there's no perceptible difference outside of BD upscaling and you seem to think that backs you up.

Yep, I couldn't believe how quiet it is, particularly because most Sony players I've had in recent years always sounded like they were going to fly apart. Even after I dropped it and busted the side panel it's still playing perfectly.

Lol. I've had a couple of Sony players in the past that sounded like helicopters taking off. I used to stack four or five heavy cookery books on top to tame the vibrations

My local Best Buy had no copies out. I asked them and they said 3 copies of each but holding them for Black Friday. Target had price tags for it but no copies. So I left and ordered it on Amazon.

I've had several of their BD players over the years and I can't remember the last one that didn't sound like a ****ing lawnmower.

UHD players don't like my glass TV stand though, not even the tank-like Sony X800, because UHDs spin at a higher RPM than BDs due to the increased data rate and I couldn't BELIEVE the racket that my Panasonic UHD players were making in particular, there's something about the vibration of the drive that kinda 'resonates' with the glass I think.

I was going bananas until I thought about getting some sort of isolation platform, like the type HiFi nerds use for their turntables or whatever, and bought one on ebay for £25. It's literally just a piece of wood with three half-spheres of rubber underneath but it's one of the best pieces of AV kit I've ever bought because it cured the vibration problems instantly!

Il presume there must be some other reason you've had several players, because else they must be pretty poorly made or bad luck if the reason is because they all ended up dying.
