Well, Sam Peckinpah is the kind of director where being a completist won't break the bank. And Noon Wine and the extras took some of the edge off the bitter disappointment of the feature itself.

Now, if only we can get a remastered version of both cuts of the really much better The Osterman Weekend without the purple haze...

What do Peckinpah fans think of the new CROSS OF IRON bluray from Hens Tooth?

Twilight Time and Eureka are the only ones that immediately come to my mind. Apparently Fox UK won't license out "Leave Her to Heaven" believing that the existing DVD is good enough.

The Killer Elite isn't fantastic, but it is a 70s action thriller starring Robert Duvall, James Caan and Bo Hopkins that takes place in San Francisco including scenes filmed on disused ships which reminded me of the climax to Magnum Force. For those reasons alone I enjoy it but I really don't think of it as a "Peckinpah" film. He probably didn't direct much of it himself anyway.

The film where James Caan introduced Sam Peckinpah to cocaine, assuring him that it was non-addictive and that he should know, he'd been using it for years. They should show it in drug abuse prevention classes.

It seems to be the same PQ-wise as all the other releases. It has a sepia tint that seems to be wrong to me, but none of the reviewers have complained about it. I only saw it on TV years and years ago, but I don't remember it looking like that.

I thought it was Oates on Garcia that introduced him.

I did not want to wait for the The Mamie Van Doren Film Noir Collection, because I want it for my Noirvember celebration, so it is on its way to me today from Amazon.

No: he was on a wide and wonderful array of prescription medication, painkillers, local Mexican, er, herbs and roots and every form of alcohol known to man (and probably a few not known before or since), but while there was always speculation it was either Kristofferson (who would later try to get him off drugs) or Oates who introduced him to coke on Garcia, it was Caan who added that to an already absurdly long list of Peckinpah addictions.

It also features Burt Young (imagine Paulie from Rocky as a free-lance killer), Gig Young (in a small role) and the always reliable Arthur Hill. And did I mention the ninjas?

I think a lot of Peckinpah fans are down on it because it's not up to his usual standards, which it isn't. It may be second-rate Peckinpah, but it's still first-rate fun.

Here's the summary from https://backtothemovies.com/the-kill...e-1975-review/:

Quote:
The Killer Elite is a wild and crazy, late-career actioner from Sam Peckinpah that combined spy plotting, sort-of-insane-kung-fu, bloody shoot-outs, wild car-chases, and seemingly every other genre ingredient under the sun.

Four Stars

After this largely negative discussion about The Killer Elite, it's going to be awkward when Kino announces they did a 4K restoration of it.

I'm trying to pare down my holiday spending on myself as much as possible this year, and any "deals" that don't seem all that amazing I'm just gonna let slide on by (Hey there Ronin! Howya doin' Twilight Time!)
but this is one set of titles I'm too eager to see.

As soon as DD kicks out a 15% coupon, and assuming the pre-coupon price remains at the current $31, I'll be ordering it.

Might put in a small order direct with Kino too, if the few titles I want are offered in the next sale.

The only other thing I know is that one of the remaining 4 will derive from this list (and be given a new 4K restoration):

Dogs of War
Under Fire
Salvador
Mississippi Burning
Khartoum
Zulu
The Killer Elite
Lenny
1984

As for the other 3, I reckon they will be Support Your Local Sheriff and Support Your Local Gunfighter (separate releases, no new restoration) and Lilies of the Field (new 4K restoration).
Is it just some MGM titles that were previously released by TT that Kino will be releasing? I would love to see a better transfer of The Greatest Story Ever Told and Hallelujah Trail. The current Blu-ray's look terrible.
