Yeah, more like a photo shoot with a fake bomb that turned out to be a real bomb and blew off his thumb and index finger. He wore a prosthesis hidden under a special glove after that and kind of hid his hand from view as much as possible which is why I'm surprised it's so prominent in that photo used on the cover. I first noticed it while watching Speedy when I just happened to notice his hand looked a little weird in some scenes and read up on it. I have a morbid interest in stuff like that. Reading up on his estate, Greenacres, is also interesting, especially after he died in the 1970s and people toured his house and said it was basically like Sunset Boulevard where everything was pretty much as it had been when the house was built in the 1920s.

I've loved Harold Lloyd since I was a kid. My first introduction to him was at a wax museum with him hanging from that big clock. I believe the only film I ever got to see on TV was Safety Last and even then it might have been just snippets since he wasn't good about licensing his films on TV. Maybe it was having to seek out his films (before home media) that piqued my interest. The harder something is to find, the more I seek it. I first heard about the hand incident from the Criterion Safety Last extras. I believe it was in reference to all the climbing he did with his damaged hand. That pic I posted is his actual prosthetic hand that was auctioned off with some of his personal items not too long ago. And speaking of his estate, isn't that the same one that was used in some of the scenes from The Most Dangerous Game (1932) ? They even used his great danes for that film....

Cool, as I have recently just discovered Harold Lloyd via Speedy (my favorite Lloyd film). Closely followed by The Freshman and Girl Shy and Why Worry. Plus shorts like From Hand to Mouth and Young Mr. Jazz etc which was essentially during his middle or late early period working with Snub Pollard. Haven’t seen this or Hot Water or For Heaven’s Sake yet.

Interesting the injuries that could have hampered famous people in their key skills but really didn’t, action comedian Harold Lloyd and his hand, Kuo Chui of the martial arts Venom mob missing some fingers, guitarist / singer Link Wray had a lung removed, singer songwriter Billy Joe Shaver missing end of a couple of fingers. Could be a whole coffee table book in it

And don't forget John Wayne. He first noticed something was wrong with his breathing on the film Circus World (1964) and at first attributed it to the fire scene (he was almost killed in the collapse). After getting it checked, he had a lung removed in between In Harms Way and The Sons of Katie Elder (both 1965). Probably from smoking but some blame radiation fallout on the set of The Conquer (1956)....

Wow, radiation fallout, that would be scary.

Oh right, also Christopher Lee’s superfluous third nipple

I decided to use the interior liner note art for the case cover, I like the image of the swindler, the strongman, and Harold Lloyd hanging in the middle

The Criterion Channel has all of the Lloyd discs and all the extras... same for Chaplin, same for Etaix and Tati. I'm not sure that they'll stop releasing Lloyd discs, but I could see older titles that don't sell as well going out of print and existing only on the Criterion Channel.

Most likely they’re going to start pairing up the shorter hour long films (or even triple packing films like Sailor Made Man, Dr. Jack, and Hot Water.) For Heaven’s Sake, the last of the Paramount-era silents, should get a solo edition...and Girl Shy should too. If anything winds up streaming only, it’ll probably be the talkies.

I’d really like all of the silents to get stand alone editions so they can pile on as many short films as possible.

I thought the same. There just doesn't seem to be all that much interest in his films to justify many standalone releases.

I hope they release Girl Shy eventually though.

They better be releasing GIRL SHY, his finest feature film along with SAFETY LAST! (THE KID BROTHER and GRANDMA'S BOY come in just underneath those two for me). However, I really hope they include the Jim Parker score as an option, which was the accompaniment for the Thames restoration originally released on VHS. I find it far superior to Robert Israel's score used in the New Line DVD release, and thus whenever I watch the film it's my DVD-R rip of my old VHS that I turn to. It just isn't the same otherwise. I LOVE that Jim Parker score.

This is a fantastic release overall. I watched all the features last weekend. The picture is great and really makes you appreciate how well shot it is, especially the Black Ghost sequence. I didn't really notice the style of the film at all on dvd, but on blu it's like an entirely new film.

The features are generally quite entertaining and informative, and while the two shorts are nothing special, I'm glad they are there.

The score by Carl Davis is fantastic, too! Probably my favorite Lloyd movie released so far by Criterion. I wonder why we haven't seen another one since?

Not to mention the shorts. A Keaton shorts collection was released on bluray, the Lloyd releases have a couple shorts that come with it, but there's no release with all the surviving shorts I'm aware of.

A quick Criterion Lloyd rundown…

Silent features released:

Safety Last!
The Freshman
The Kid Brother
Speedy

Unreleased silent features:

A Sailor-Made Man
Grandma’s Boy
Dr. Jack
Why Worry?
Girl Shy
Hot Water
For Heaven’s Sake

And out of his 81 surviving silent short comedies (1 with Willie Work, 14 with Lonesome Luke, and 66 with the Glasses Character; sadly, 73 of his silent shorts are lost), Criterion has released a mere nine of them as special features, three each on Safety Last! and The Freshman, two on The Kid Brother, and one on Speedy:

Over the Fence (1917, the first film featuring the Glasses Character)
That’s Him (1918)
Take a Chance (1918)
Young Mr. Jazz (1919)
The Marathon (1919)
Bumping into Broadway (1919)
His Royal Slyness (1920)
An Eastern Westerner (1920)
High and Dizzy (1920)

All of Keaton’s silent films have been released on Blu umpteen times by various labels; c’mon, let’s have some more Lloyd love, Criterion!
