It doesn't have to be some 10-grand jobbie. X-rite also produce the Colormunki line of meters and their Colormunki Photo is a very economical way of getting hold of a spectro. I think it's recently been rechristened as the 'i1Studio'.

The basic patterns will show where things like black level should be set but most TVs have the black properly set out of the box, on a 'cinema' or 'pro' picture preset anyways. Most of the test patterns are geared towards measuring the output from the TV with a colourimeter so would be all but useless without one. The HDR ramps are cool for seeing how your display and/or HDR optimised player is mapping the range, but you can get a 0-10,000-nit ramp for free on any Sony UHD disc, just press 7669 when on the main menu (İ Penton Man).

As it stands, I have left brightness at zero (default) and even the gamma to zero (the default in all picture modes on my display), but I'm unsure if adjusting these either way (up or down) will improve black levels for better shadow detail (combating black crush) or if doing so will raise blacks to the point they're too gray-ish or noisy (this also has me wondering if the Movie mode defaults are actually accurate as-is)... |

But, for anyone keeping score, note the mention of Sony's sharpness at 50 actually being the 'Off' position that neither adds nor subtracts, e.g. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...0#post14248391 And just look at all that shit that Sony TVs have in general ![]() |

Although there are a few PQ tweaks mentioned in it that are referred to as necessary, when it's really more about preference, and that bothers me somewhat. Setting films to 'cool' is usually less accurate than warm. |

Thanks for posting this. I turned both Motionflow and Cinemotion off while watching movies on disc. It turned out the real issue was stutter(X900F), so even though Tom might be disappointed in me, I decided to watch movies at 1 or 2 Smoothness. The opening slow camera pan for Hell or High Water on 4k UHD is torture without smoothing, and it also takes care of occasional motion stutter.

The opening shot of HoHW will look like juddery shite in its native form, you just can't get around that with such slow pans in a 24fps capture format with a 180-degree shutter. Unfortunately HDR exacerbates this in-built judder because the brighter image makes the lack of temporal resolution more obvious.

Not sure what to think ... it's almost like we're seeing "cheat-codes" for home video presentations, HDR has that feel as well. |
