It doesn't have to be some 10-grand jobbie. X-rite also produce the Colormunki line of meters and their Colormunki Photo is a very economical way of getting hold of a spectro. I think it's recently been rechristened as the 'i1Studio'.

Skip the disc and just buy the download. Best $25 I've ever spent.

The settings on this TV have given me a big headache to get right. Motion interpolation is the worst and should not even be a option in television sets.
Thanks for those settings - now watching “the Gymkhama files” in 4K on Amazon 4K tv, looks great!

Thanks, I'm really inexperienced. With the download, would I just use USB to run the calibration?

Yep. The Panny can be a bit finicky with file formats but IIRC the zip file contains both .ts and .mp4 versions of the patterns so if you use the latter you should be fine.

Edit: Thanks, ill def use that option. Its how I changed the firmware on the panny. But I am glad that it accepts video through the usb, I've been meaning to see what I can play from my external as well.

And you believe it will get the picture calibrated on my MU8000 better than its ever looked?

The basic patterns will show where things like black level should be set but most TVs have the black properly set out of the box, on a 'cinema' or 'pro' picture preset anyways. Most of the test patterns are geared towards measuring the output from the TV with a colourimeter so would be all but useless without one. The HDR ramps are cool for seeing how your display and/or HDR optimised player is mapping the range, but you can get a 0-10,000-nit ramp for free on any Sony UHD disc, just press 7669 when on the main menu (İ Penton Man).

Interestingly enough, my Sammy sets the brightness (black level) to "0" (which is the middle of the range) on ALL picture modes by untouched default -- and this includes the more accurate MOVIE mode (which I use for serious dark room viewing). When I used the Spears and Munsil setup Blu-ray (as well as a DVD setup disc) to try and set black levels via the pluge patterns, I couldn't really get the black bars in the tests to move much at all, so I couldn't really get an accurate reading...I just recently read somewhere (or it may have been in one of Vincent's YouTube video reviews of a Samsung) that the MU and NU series doesn't allow for true black level manipulation via the brightness controls, and as such it's best to adjust gamma to get shadow detail curves right.

As it stands, I have left brightness at zero (default) and even the gamma to zero (the default in all picture modes on my display), but I'm unsure if adjusting these either way (up or down) will improve black levels for better shadow detail (combating black crush) or if doing so will raise blacks to the point they're too gray-ish or noisy (this also has me wondering if the Movie mode defaults are actually accurate as-is)...

The next thing Mr Cruise needs to do is go after Apple, Roku, etc for converting 24fps to 60 fps in their boxes. You are not seeing it as intended. You should not have to figure out in the device how to display at the native frame rate. That's should be default, and converting everything to 60fps should be a setting the user has to change, not the other way around.

Agreed but at least there are those options.

Oh man that is SO cool, interesting to see the bit about colour temperature though as they would've shirley mastered this to the industry standard 6500K?

But, for anyone keeping score, note the mention of Sony's sharpness at 50 actually being the 'Off' position that neither adds nor subtracts, e.g. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...0#post14248391

And just look at all that shit that Sony TVs have in general

That's kind of hilariously detailed but cool... obviously most of us on these forums would already know most of those practices but it's interesting to see them suggested for viewing Roma specifically.

Although there are a few PQ tweaks mentioned in it that are referred to as necessary, when it's really more about preference, and that bothers me somewhat. Setting films to 'cool' is usually less accurate than warm.

The Vizio recommendations are almost spot on, except for turning off local dimming and film mode should be turned off. Sharpness at 0 makes the picture soft and fine detail is lost while viewing HDR content.

Thanks for posting this. I turned both Motionflow and Cinemotion off while watching movies on disc. It turned out the real issue was stutter(X900F), so even though Tom might be disappointed in me, I decided to watch movies at 1 or 2 Smoothness. The opening slow camera pan for Hell or High Water on 4k UHD is torture without smoothing, and it also takes care of occasional motion stutter.

The opening shot of HoHW will look like juddery shite in its native form, you just can't get around that with such slow pans in a 24fps capture format with a 180-degree shutter. Unfortunately HDR exacerbates this in-built judder because the brighter image makes the lack of temporal resolution more obvious.

Nevertheless, motion interpolation stays completely off in this household at all times.

2. Set your color temperature to "normal"
"Warm" color temperature can make the film appear tinted sepia or yellow. When set to "cool" the film can appear overly blue. Set the color temperature to "normal" to avoid this.
Isn't that the complete opposite to what we've been telling people for years? Normal would be close to 10,000K with most displays.

Not sure what to think ... it's almost like we're seeing "cheat-codes" for home video presentations, HDR has that feel as well.
