If you go by the original movie's numbers, the new movie did proportionally better, and the original movie got a sequel.
With the cost of tickets then vs now, that is not a good comparison.

World Wide box office is a much bigger slice of the pie than it was in 2001. Movie studios get a greater percentage of the ticket sales from the USA than they do markets like China, which is were movies these days are making a huge extra chunk of cash. That Chinese box-office for American films practically didn't even exist in 2001. The first film made 131M in the USA which is equivilant of $212M today, This year's Tomb Raider only made $58 M in the USA.

275M worldwide in today's market isn't very good for a movie in the 100M budget range. Plus being that it was poorly recieved, a sequel would probably make even less money.

I think with a lackluster reception to the new game and the film the franchise will lay dormant for quite some time which sucks.

A supposed insider has claimed that the franchise will be on a hiatus for a while, though I think that would've happened even if Shadow had received glowing reviews across the board. Now that they've concluded the trilogy, they're gonna have to revamp the gameplay next time to keep things fresh.

True, it was just a tough era to release a game with red dead 2 and odyssey etc. Still love TR.

Releasing it the week after Spider-Man was financial suicide.

It's okay, Shadow. I still love you.

The comparison is not in the total, but in how the total compares to the budget.

I watched this maybe a month ago and enjoyed it quite a bit. I'd really enjoy a sequel. Hope they give one a chance.

It's a different time now, with larger markets, increased marketing costs, etc.

I would love a sequel, but I just don't see it happening with today's industry.

Number of tickets really doesn't matter. What matters is how box office compares to the budget. The budget was lower here, and box office was about the same.

That does not make sense. If people do not buy tickets the movie does not have an audience.

It's all about money. Number of tickets will always be relative to the money, but what the studios care about is how much profit or loss they made. It doesn't really matter how many tickets sold from one movie to another because they had different budgets, were released in different years, etc.

Original Tomb Raider had a budget of $115 Million. When compared to the price of a ticket today, that would be equivalent to a movie with a budget of $186 Million today. The new movie had a budget of $94 Million. That means the old movie needed to sell nearly twice as many tickets to be profitable as the new movie would have needed. That's why the actual number of tickets is meaningless here.

How did Square Enix mess up the release date AGAIN?! I mean literally Rise got crushed cause it came out right between Fallout 4 and Battlefront then they thought it'd be a good idea to release Shadow right after Spider-Man?

That's true but they still could've moved the release date up or released it in August where it could've had a month advantage over the fall season (and Uncharted Lost Legacy came out in August the previous year as well).

It'll be interesting to see how February plays out cause Anthem, Metro, and Crackdown are all releasing at the same time.

Tomb Raider 2013 came out in March, and was the most succesful of the reboots. You'd think they'd have learned after the release of Rise. But that's Square Enix for you. Stubborn morons that kill their own IP's.

That Destiny Child's cover was the best thing this movie had to offer in all honestly.
