And that's not to count endless postponing of the release date, which is also an issue in my book.

Do you research before you post.

Alamo Drafthouse in Northern VA is having an Alien/Aliens double feature on 01/20. Was thinking about it, but I don't think I can do 4 1/2 hours, on a Sunday night. Plus I'm sure I'll be seeing Glass that weekend.

I've seen Alien about 5 times on the big screen. Aliens about 6. Just never seen them as a double feature before. I did see Aliens paired up with The Fly in 1986, as a Halloween special re-release.

Hopefully, they're not showing the so-called Director's Cut of Alien on this double feature as it ruins the continuity between the two films.

Agreed.

I happen to like the DC, but they placed the cocoon scene, in a poor spot. She should've found the hive, right after she found Parker and Lambert's remains. Halting her escape, after she's already set off the destruct system, is a head scratcher.

It's more that the DC shows a different life cycle for the aliens... no queen and no hive, which is the big reveal for the second film.

Too true. The music made that trailer. Gone are the days of movie ads that are compelling yet spoiler free.

I remember as a little kid, watching commercials or listening to radio spots, for It's Alive, Suspiria, Prophecy (1979), Beyond The Door, Halloween, The Fog, My Bloody Valentine, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Jaws, Alien etc. So well done, I still remember them as an adult. Very effective.

I was 6 or 7 when the It's Alive promotions were on, and I still remember how terrifying they were. The movie, while good, not so scary.

I remember being terrified of the Suspiria (1977) trailer. Hated the movie when I finally got the nerve to see it.

LOL guess you don't watch too many old trailers. They've always revealed way too much. If anything it's usually better now, not worse.

They only show the theatrical cut of Alien and the SE cut of Aliens. The restored Alien is the theatrical cut, so far as I know, and the DC seems to have been abandoned for 4K.

Have you got a source that says Fox are not restoring DC for 4k release?
All previous generations of Alien had both cuts on the disc, DVD SEs had it and then Blu Ray had it.
I hope your not correct and the 4k release is both cuts. Fox seems good with releasing Alien franchise and I dont want it to be ruined like Studio Canal ruined the Terminator 2 4k release with bad remaster and only theatrical cut.

I always thought one day I might meet someone who preferred the "director's cut" of Alien, but now that I have I realize I wasn't prepared.

taking away the "what are my chances" scene with "Mother" is what ruins the director's cut for me.... otherwise it would be my preferred version.

If I recall correctly it trims up the pacing a bit, so why am I not surprised!

I don't have problem one with the pacing of the original, but yes: the DC is the equivalent of a modern dance remix of an old favourite, and people have been known to like those from time to time, often helping to bring a new generation of admirers around to the charms of the original.

I'd like to see a super-cut consisting of all the DC additional scenes added to the theatrical cut. Bonus points if they can dig up some of the other gorier death scenes, if only as supplements, just to see what supposedly sickened the studio execs so much back in the day. I definitely get the feeling a lot was removed from Lambert and Parker's in particular.

I wouldn't. That's exactly what Fox were planning to do with the DC - just lump in a load of deleted scenes - until Ridley got wind of it and insisted that he be allowed to recut the movie his way, using it as an experiment to jazz it up slightly.

I do however adore the scene when Lambert clatters Ripley with a swinging right hander, she really connects and you can see how stunned Sigourney Weaver is for a split second. Odd thing is, the take of that scene included in the Laserdisc's supplemental materials is different. Not that "different take is different" shocker, just that one was specifically picked for the LD but then Scott chose another to put back into the film.
