Neat. Hopefully this also means the player can detect the HDR format automatically, and that it doesn't need firmware updates to do what's advertised on the box.

But it's that increased density combined with brighter HDR and conventional 24p frame rates & shutter angles which could make these a bit of a disappointment when it comes to increased image judder. And in lieu of any content - there's certainly no 8K disc or TV broadcasts in the West, maybe some OTT delivery? - then these will remain fancy upscalers and are strictly for poseurs and ohmaigodigottahaveit types for whom money is no object. Still, that's the true meaning of CESmas!
I was pretty much expecting these 8K models to keep rolling out from the big boys after Samsung launched theirs, I'm more or less indifferent to them myself, though I guess some of the tech might benefit future 4K models as well. I never have and never will be able to afford these silly top-end products anyway so it's not like I have any stake in what the manufacturers roll out in that price range to begin with. They all have to start releasing 8K models just for the sake of competition though, no one wants to be the odd one out in this game.

And I could have done without 8K. Not sure why manufacturers want it to be a thing now. I actually would have preferred that Z9G to be "just" 4K.
Samsung did show off a 75" microLED prototype yesterday, so they're making progress as far as getting the size right at least. I doubt consumer models are going to become a thing until next year at the very earliest though, I doubt they've started getting high enough yields for serious mass-production yet.

This is true, I was expecting it too but this particular K race is a bit silly at this juncture. I mean, sure, they always look a bit daft at the start, and there weren't no 4K content back when I bought my 55X9005A in July 2013 - but at least we knew that 4K Blu-ray was in the works and three years later it arrived. Will we get 8K Blu-ray in that same time period? Highly doubtful. And with TV broadcast labouring to get into 4K in the West, never mind 8K (same goes for movie DI's) then these sets really are chasing after something that they don't need to be chasing. Can't wait for all the 'the sky is falling!' threads that will pop up announcing the demise of 4K.

I really want to know if you can see much of a difference between 4K and 8K. I can see people can see a good amount of benefits from 4K when watching 10-12 ft on a 55-65 inch. But a 65 inch 8k, are your really going to get a much better viewing experience. You can already see the fine grain in these remastered 4K blu rays.

Yeah, and then those will be first gen TVs. It will probably take another year or two to work out any teething troubles.

Backlight Master Drive and X-Wide Angle together on one TV? Wonder how that will work out.

I have to wonder if these 8K TVs can even accept a native 8K signal. We're actually at a point where not even a computer currently can drive them. There are no HDMI 2.1 compatible video cards and even Display port 1.4 is limited to 8K 30hz but no converters exist yet. I've just finally been able to run my Sony TV at 4K with a videocard upgrade and have found enough programs that have poor scaling at this resolution.

Yeah, very curious about that as well.

The BMD would be a waste and pretty much useless if the same problems would arise like with the Z9F.

Yeah, because you must be getting tired already of that "old" C8.

Oh, and I love that the goofy legs from last year are carrying over.

Some hate them, but I genuinely think they have a certain charm.

After the Z9F I’m a little cautious about getting excited for a new Sony LCD model. But given the huge sizes and terminology they used (“ultra-dense LED modules that are independently controlled, delivering unprecedented contrast with punchy brightness and pitch blacks”) I think it’s a good bet that this is a true/worthy successor to the Z9D. Of course, I’ll wait for reviews and tests before getting excited and considering a purchase (plus what will the price be?), but things are looking good so far. Hopefully the color saturation and color volume are good, especially in colors with low-brightness (which is where the Z9D struggled with a bit).

Could not care less about 8K. Doesn’t hurt, but doesn’t add much if anything at all imo.

Hopefully it will actually be affordable, but those sizes (85” is the smallest one) do have me worried a bit for the prices.

Why, no OLED 8K TVs, improved extreme X1 video processor chip with super fast response time under two seconds (best for fast action movies and sports without blur), no 8K BR player, a new video chip inside the X800 player now supporting Dolby Vision and HLG, no 3D 4K TV? HDMI 2.1 support?

LCD FALD LED 8K yes, HDMI 2.1 yes, DV and HLG in the new X800M2 BR player version 2 (Mach2) yes, HFR support yes. 3D is for front projectors, the true real life 3D immersion, size matters not small 98" flat panels (humor).
Picture Processor X1™ Ultimate and 8K X-Reality PRO – pictures are sharpened and refined in real time, and images are upscaled closer to true 8K quality using Sony's exclusive 8K database.

About Samsung, any OLED TVs to compete with LG and Sony?

Panasonic OLED TVs, still no Dolby Vision support when their 4K players do?
For Canadians and UK people only, left in the cold.

Is Sony lagging behind in advanced technologies in 2019?
I believe what you said, Sony is not the leader it used to be; Samsung and LG are.
But that's fine, they use parts from other manufacturers and they develop their own processing power from the important video chip implementation. They play safe to not get burn and charge more for their old name and their innovative designs.

No news of Oppo coming back in 2019?
