If I had to pull a guess out of my rear I'd say they thought she matched that in casting but then some high-up dumbass said "she looks too old" after watching early footage and thus they smoothed her out.

Probably right, but in that case I put the blame on Jackson. Coming off the financial/critical/awards success of Lord of the Rings, he should've had enough sway to say "No." But I suppose Jackson has always been one of the Lucas/Spielberg/Cameron/Zemeckis guys that loves playing with the new toys, even when they're not necessary.

Probably my biggest issues after the booming contrast is how lifeless and colorless the jungles and greens look like on the 4k... Not every scene.
or maybe i just have 1080p colors stuck in my head idk but it looks much more vivid ln the old bluray

Not strictly Watts related is this, but I read something recently where Jackson said that although he put in some more stuff for the Extended Edition he didn't feel that it was necessary, and that what he really wants to do is actually tighten the movie up to deliver a shorter version, shorter than the theatrical even. It'll probably never happen, but is perhaps an insight into how he feels about his decision making in general on this film.

Too bad that new introspective state of mind doesn't translate into The Hobbit Trilogy. What a bloated mess.

King Kong and after, he lost all sense of pure filmmaking technique and fell into the self serving, vanity project, CGI porn trap. Plus, he needs quality writers creating a solid foundation to work from rather than he and his partner... just look at Mortal Engines as a prime example - pure junk.

That's not the same thing as a professional DV mastering job.

Extended cut is in Dolby Vision on iTunes.

To me Dolby Vision is overrated, after comparing some titles in HDR10 and DV I don't see that much of a difference, LG's dynamic tone mapping does a very good job.

How big an improvement DV is depends on the TV really (outside a few discs that have HDR 10 issues).

The whole island section is just brilliant and still delivers the goods, I could watch that as a movie in its own right over and over. It lasts for like an hour and a half anyway.

I've only seen this on Apple TV 4k. Does the disk look marginally better? Because I wasn't impressed at all with the streaming version.

I will never be impressed with streaming movies. Physical disc all the way.

The disc will always look a bit better, but in most cases will it look radically different? No. Lots of people don't like this one because of the weird DI and the pumped up contrast causing an HDR apocalypse, so if those were your reasons the disc is no different.

That made me lol. Or 'HDRcalypse', if you will.

Good tone mapping is most of the battle. You get a TV that does it well and the actual dynamic formats will be the cherry on top rather than the be-all and end-all of the presentation.

As I just discovered last week Dolby Vision looks horrid on my LG 2016 TV thanks to the firmware which has a major issue with brightness jumps. Thankfully HDR10 looks pretty fantastic on it considering the limitations of the LCD panel and edge lighting/zones.
