I think a few plates were done over there, but the bulk was shot in Atlanta IIRC.

I believe I said this to you before: the filmmakers were so intent on presenting this singularly stylised Afro-futurist vision that they designed it from the ground up, from the cityscape to the landscape and everything in-between. Doesn't make it easier for you to swallow of course, but it is what it is. HDR helps immensely in rendering out shade and volume and depth to this inherent fakery though.

It's like Legend of Tarzan, they have a huge budget and could easily afford to go on location with actors to shoot but they decide it's easier to green screen the whole thing leaving the resulting movie looking very fake at times/ all the time.

Hah! Velvet's moaned about that one too. Not having seen it I haven't got an opinion to offer on what it looks like to me ('phew!', they all said in unison), but if it's literally just a jungle that they're recreating rather than an entire rendering of a mythical African city then I can understand more why that would tick people off.

Yeah I really like the movie but there's no getting past the fakery on display at times. Some shocking green screen and CG backgrounds like Black Panther.

That train sequence in Legend of Tarzan is more animated than the Disney movie lol. I’m sure some of it is due to reshoots and tight schedules though. And of course Yates couldn’t be arsed after he’d moved on to Fantastic Beasts.

Sure, but stuff like them standing by a wood fence in a field could have EASILY been done on location. Even in freaking Atlanta they could have done that. I'm not gonna call it laziness, but it's just a default choice by some filmmakers to stay in the studio and let post-production handle it. That's the stuff that drives me nuts, not CGI in general (which is a great tool when used effectively).

Heh, reminds me of The Hobbit BTS stuff. Anyway either way, the point is it didn't look real at all in scenes where it easily could have.

Right...but that wasn't the point for them, it was a conscious decision to change the production design for something else and do it in tha computah. It's very Star Wars prequely is what it is, but as long as it's in support of creating a more overtly fantastical world and is done to a good level of competency then I'm fine with it.

I'm fine with it as long as it doesn't win a freaking Oscar.

On that we are agreed. If they dare show some of the train fight between Killmonger and T'Challa in the Oscar sizzle reel then I will laugh, loudly.

TBH when it comes to all this digital background stuff then I can stomach it more than you can, it's fair to say, but what still PISSES me off is the all-CG suits for certain characters like BP and Spidey, and even Stark's suit look shite in Infinity War. At least the more mechanical, more angular suits of Marvel movies past had some texture, some character to them, but this "nano tech" one looks like a ****ing unitard.

Banner's floating head in the open Hulk-buster armor in Infinity War gives me nightmares.

Very brave of you to say, and yet so true.

Precisely. I'm also going to lose more faith with the academy if this movie is nominated for any of the major categories, which would be inconsistent with all of the Marvel and Star Wars movies that came before it. Black Panther is very good, but it is also more Marvel CBM fluff.

Honestly, I don't think that it will get nominated outside of the technical categories. But I believe that's only because there is a strong African American prescence from other films this year with Green Book, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Blackklansman.

I don't mind the idea behind the nanosuit, but it looks weightless and unconvincing, like it's not part of a scene, but was just pasted.

Still, Infinity War is 99,99% great when it comes to CGI, while Black Panther is 99,99% shitty, unfinished and cheap to my eyes and I'm very sensitive when it comes to special effects. (To this day I can't stand digital extras in some shots from Avatar!!!)

I think this movie is one of the bigger upgrades in terms of HDR helping to make VFX look better. Not that I think they're Oscar-worthy, but they don't look nearly as embarrassing as they did in theaters/SDR in general. The finale is where most of the memorably bad stuff happens (rhinos, underground fight, etc.); dunno much about the production, but I wonder how much of that stuff was from reshoots and if they simply didn't have enough time for better effects.

I received my used copy in the mail. I can’t wait to watch this again. Everything was included and in immaculate condition, minus the digital code.

I think they'll nominate it for best picture, I really do. Just as a statement, as an acknowledgement of its "importance." It won't win, but I'd bet a considerable amount of money it will be nominated.

I don't often go for that "they didn't have enough time becuz reshoots" thing, because on a movie that has 2000/3000 VFX shots then there will inevitably be some that slip through the cracks, particularly with all the different vendors that are roped in these days. I can't remember the movie but I remember listening in the commentary about how late certain shots were added, and the VFX for those looked just as good as if not better than the other stuff in the movie.
