Are you using different inputs for DirecTV and DVD? If so, you have to adjust each input. How is everything hooked up?

DvD is coaxal
directv is s-video
run through a denon 987 out put hdmi to tv

Whoa. There's your problem. Does your DTV box have component outputs? If so, use those. If not . . . get a new DTV box and use component If you get a new one, it should actually have HDMI.

What do you mean by coaxial? DVD players don't have coax connections. Do you mean composite (red, white, yellow)?

you maybe have the problem with the directv running s-video through a denon and out through hdmi to the 650 the denon maybe trying to hard to upconvert it. try S-video straight into the 650. see what happins. love my 650 good luck

sorry your right . My audio is play though coaxial. Here is a link of a pic of the back of my dvd player

My dtv box does not have hdmi. I looked into geting one until I found out dtv charges for a hi-def signal. will the way I have the tv wired up hurt the screen. Thanks for the responses.

Do yourself a favor and run Component Video Out from your DVD player into your TV. Much better than just standard video out.

If you spent the money on an HDTV, you might want to consider upgrading your DTV to HDTV (and, with it, an HDMI-capable box).

It should not hurt your LCD screen, though others might disagree.

yeah the reason it doesnt look good is because youre running crappy SD content onto a nice HD screen

Even if you don't get high def through DTV, a box with component outs/component cables will still dramtatically improve your picture quality. Like I and others said, do yourself a favor and get some component cables for your DVD player. It'll make a huge difference. I recommend www.bluejeanscables.com.

agreed. to the OP, what kind of outputs does your DTV box have on it? and also go buy some component cables for your dvd player as that will help the PQ out a lot

no but I still say run the cables straight into the 650. the only thing that runs through my YAMAHA 663 for video is HDMI that is it. and yes use component cables for the dvd straight into the 650. much better pitcher.
